kSIST FprEN 1090-4:2026 is the SIST version of the draft European Standard prEN 1090-4 from CEN/TC 135. It specifies technical requirements for the execution - meaning the manufacture and installation - of cold-formed structural steel members, profiled sheeting and cold-formed structures for roof, ceiling, floor, wall and cladding applications. The document is aimed at manufacturers, installers, designers and quality teams that need clear rules for materials, documentation, welding, fastening, tolerances, surface protection, inspection and deconstruction.
What does kSIST FprEN 1090-4:2026 specify?
kSIST FprEN 1090-4:2026 sets execution requirements for cold-formed structural steel elements and structures used in building envelopes and similar applications. It applies to structures designed to the EN 1993 series, especially structural members and profiled sheeting designed to EN 1993-1-3 and EN 1993-1-4.
The document also allows use with other design rules, but only when the execution conditions match those rules and any extra requirements are stated. It covers predominately static and seismic loading conditions, as well as documentation for the work.
It is organized into general clauses on scope, references, terms, documentation, products, manufacturing, welding, fastening, installation, surface protection, tolerances, inspection and deconstruction, followed by annexes that give detailed requirements and supporting information.
| Annex | What it covers |
|---|---|
| A | Basic requirements for profiled sheeting, including support, edges, building physics, roof drainage and walkability-related provisions |
| B | Additional design requirements for profiled sheeting, including serviceability, support widths, cantilevers and effective load width |
| C | Installation records |
| D | Geometrical tolerances, including essential and functional manufacturing tolerances |
| E | Corrosion protection by metallic coating with or without organic coatings, including suitability testing and monitoring |
| F | Additional information required or assumed when the main text says something shall be specified or not otherwise specified |
The scope is broad, but it stays within cold-formed steel execution. It includes not welded built-up sections, cold-formed closed and hollow sections with longitudinal seam welding, perforated and micro profiled sheets and members, spacer constructions with structural purpose, steel profiled sheeting for composite floors during installation, and deconstruction of these structures. It excludes composite structural members where dissimilar materials are part of the structural behaviour, such as sandwich panels and composite floors, and it does not set the detailed rules for thermal insulation, moisture protection, noise control, fire protection detailing, traditional plumber or tinsmith cladding methods, or detailed water-tightness, air permeability and thermal aspects of profiled sheeting.
What are the key requirements of kSIST FprEN 1090-4:2026?
kSIST FprEN 1090-4:2026 is mainly about controlling execution so the finished structure matches the design assumptions. Its key requirements are spread across the documentation, product, manufacturing, fastening, installation, protection and inspection clauses.
Specifications, records and traceability
Clause 4 requires an execution specification from the manufacturer and an installation specification from the installer, together with layout drawings, installation quality documentation and traceability records. This matters because the standard expects the work to be planned and recorded, not just assembled on site.
Installation documentation has to show that the work followed the installation specification, and the company responsible for installation signs a statement of completion. Traceability runs from material purchase through production and installation, so batches and delivered products can be linked back to their declared properties if a problem appears later.
Materials and product identification
Clause 5 requires materials to conform to the listed product standards or to have specified properties if they fall outside them. For steel products, the inspection document is 3.1 to EN 10204, and delivery identification must support traceability with product, batch, thickness, steel grade and corrosion protection information.
For profiled sheeting, the material rules point to EN 10346 and EN 508-3, with specific steel grades and coatings listed for profiled sheet use. The text also fixes a minimum yield strength for profiled sheets and states that deep drawing quality steels to EN 10346 are not permitted for profiled sheets. In practice, this means the manufacturer cannot substitute any convenient coil material without checking that it fits the execution rules.
Coatings, fire performance and lightning protection
Clause 5 also ties surface protection to Clause 10 and Annex E, so corrosion resistance must be selected and verified against the corrosivity category. External fire performance for roof outer layers has to be tested with the methods in CEN/TS 1187 and classified to EN 13501-5, while reaction to fire, resistance to fire and release of dangerous substances follow EN 1090-1.
If the steel element forms part of a lightning protection system, the standard points to EN 62305-3. That means the structural steel or sheeting cannot be treated as a purely architectural element when it is used as part of the building protection system.
Manufacturing, forming and welding
Clause 6 requires cold forming from steel sheet or strip/coil and says bent areas shall not show visible cracks. Hammering is not allowed, and stainless steel forming equipment must be cleaned when used on the same equipment as other steels unless equivalence is proven by testing.
Clause 7 applies EN 1090-2 welding provisions where appropriate and adds specific rules for the longitudinal seam of custom cold-formed closed and hollow sections. The welding procedure specification has to be based on a pre-production test to EN ISO 15613, and production control includes destructive testing and, where used, continuous monitoring such as eddy current inspection. Site welding on organic coated products is not permitted, and any impact on metallic coating and corrosion protection at welded locations has to be corrected.
Mechanical fastening and installation
Clause 8 covers screws, blind rivets and cartridge fired pins, including tool settings, application limits, edge distances and how sidelaps are joined. Fasteners must match the installation specification and the fastener manufacturer’s instructions, and the installer has to control hole size, tightening torque, perpendicular driving and washer compression.
After fastening, drilling swarf and broken mandrel stems must be removed from exterior surfaces to prevent corrosion. That is a practical point: the standard treats small debris as a durability risk, not just a housekeeping issue.
Site work, safety and final condition
Clause 9 sets site conditions, training of installation personnel, inspection of preceding works, layout drawing control, tools, fall protection, storage, lifting, laying, and post-installation cleaning. It requires weather and access conditions to be suitable before work starts, and it requires damaged products to be used only if capacity, serviceability and durability remain sufficient.
The clause also covers special matters such as diaphragm marking, protection against movement during interruption of work, and confirmation to the lightning protection specialist when the roof is used as a natural element of the system. In practice, this means the installer has responsibility for both safe working and the final technical condition of the installed structure.
Surface protection, tolerances and acceptance
Clause 10 deals with corrosion protection and maintenance for carbon steels, stainless steels and mixed metallic materials. Clause 11 distinguishes essential tolerances from functional tolerances, with special tolerances possible where they are specified for a project.
Clause 12 requires planned inspection, testing and correction, including checks of non-conforming products, manufactured dimensions, the installed structure and fastenings. Clause 13 extends the logic of safe site work to deconstruction, so removal of profiled sheeting also has to be planned, controlled and documented.
What terms does kSIST FprEN 1090-4:2026 define?
kSIST FprEN 1090-4:2026 defines the terms used to describe parts of the structure, the connection details and the execution controls.
- component I - the component facing the head of the fastener, usually the profiled sheeting.
- component II - the second component of the connection, usually the supporting member.
- decking - load-bearing profiled sheeting used to support insulation and an outer skin.
- decking edge trim - a fold at the free end of an outstand plane element that restrains local buckling and keeps the geometry under access loads.
- fastening - the fastener, the process of fastening and the final connected components.

1 Scope
This document specifies requirements for the execution, i.e. the manufacture and the installation, of cold-
formed structural steel members and profiled sheeting and cold-formed structures for roof, ceiling, floor,
wall and cladding applications.
This document applies to structures designed according to the EN 1993 series.
This document applies to structural members and profiled sheeting designed according to EN 1993-1-3.
This document can be used for structures designed according to other design rules provided that
conditions for execution comply with them and any necessary additional requirements are specified.
This document also specifies requirements for the execution i.e. the manufacture and the installation of
structures made from cold-formed profiled sheeting for roof, ceiling, floor and wall applications under
predominately static loading or seismic loading conditions and their documentation.
This document covers structural profiled sheeting of Structural Class I and II and structural profiled
sheeting in Structural Class III according to EN 1993-1-3 used in structures.
NOTE 1 In National Annexes of EN 1993-1-3 specifications can be given regarding the use of the Structural
Classes.
This document covers structural members of all structural classes according to EN 1993-1-3.
Structural profiled sheeting is understood here to be:
— profiled sheet, such as trapezoidal, sinusoidal or liner trays (Figure 1).
Structural members are understood here to be:
— members (linear profiled cross sections) that are produced by cold forming (Figure 2).
This document also covers:
— not welded built-up sections (Figure 2d);
— cold-formed closed and hollow sections including the welding of the longitudinal seam (Figure 2b and
Figure 2c), not covered by EN 10219-1;
— perforated, punctured and micro profiled sheeting and members;
The welding of built-up sections are not covered. The welding provisions are given in EN 1090-2.
This document also covers spacer constructions between the outer and inner or upper and lower skins
for roofs, walls and ceilings made from cold-formed profiled sheeting and the connections and
attachments of the afore mentioned elements as long as all has a structural purpose.
This document covers steel profiled sheeting for composite floors, e.g. during installation and in stage of
pouring concrete.
This document also covers the deconstruction of structures made from cold-formed profiled sheeting and
structural members for roof, ceiling, floor and wall applications.
Composite structural members where the interaction between dissimilar materials are an integral part
of the structural behaviour such as sandwich panels and composite floors are not covered by this
document.
This document does not cover the necessary analyses and detailing and execution rules for thermal
insulation, moisture protection, noise control and fire protection.
oSIST prEN 1090-4:2025

This document does not cover regulations of roof cladding and wall cladding, produced by traditional
plumber methods or tinsmith methods.
This document does not cover detailed requirements for water tightness or air permeability resistance
and thermal aspects of profiled sheeting.
NOTE 2 The structures covered in this document can be for example.
— single- or multi-skin roofs, whereby the load-bearing structure (lower skin) or the actual roof covering (upper
skin) or both consist of cold-formed structural members and profiled sheeting;
— single- or multi-skin walls whereby the load-bearing structure (inner skin), the actual cladding (outer skin) or
both consist of cold-formed structural members and profiled sheeting, or
— trusses from cold-formed members.
NOTE 3 Structures can consist of an assembly of structural members and profiled sheeting made of steel
according to EN 1090-4 and of aluminium according to EN 1090-5.
