General Information

Abstract

This document specifies three film-digitisation quality classes for the requirements of non-destructive testing. The user specifies one of these quality classes for the respective film digitisation task. The digitisation parameters depend on the radiation energy, the material thickness penetrated and the quality level of the original radiographic film. This document does not address signal processing, display and storage of the digitised data.
For the application of this document, ISO 14096-1 provides definitions and measurement procedures.

Overview

SIST EN ISO 14096-2:2026 specifies the minimum requirements for the qualification of radiographic film digitisation systems as used in non-destructive testing (NDT). This international standard identifies three distinct film digitisation quality classes-DS, DB, and DA-that provide a framework for evaluating and selecting digitisation systems based on the needs of specific industrial applications. The classification considers critical parameters, including radiation energy, material thickness, and the quality demands of the original radiographic film. By ensuring that important information is maintained during the digitisation process, this standard supports accurate analysis, reliable archiving, and proper evaluation of radiographic data. The document does not address the further processing, display, or storage of digitised data.

Key Topics

  • Digitisation Quality Classes: Defines DS (digital storage), DB, and DA, each catering to different application and quality needs.
    • DS: Highest quality class, suitable for digital archiving with minimal loss of resolution or sensitivity.
    • DB: Allows some image quality reduction, suitable for digital analysis with original films archived.
    • DA: Permits further image quality and spatial resolution reduction, also intended for analysis with film archiving.
  • Parameter Guidelines:
    • Density Range: Specifies the minimum optical density range each class must cover.
    • Digital Resolution: Details the required bit depth for digital conversion to ensure adequate grayscale differentiation.
    • Density Contrast Sensitivity: Outlines maximum allowable sensitivity loss.
    • Basic Spatial Resolution: Sets class-specific limits based on radiation energy used and material thickness.
  • Application-Driven Selection: The user is responsible for selecting the appropriate quality class by considering the material being inspected, the type of radiographic film, and the intended inspection outcome.
  • Testing and Verification: References established procedures (from related standards) for testing spatial resolution and image quality, including the use of image quality indicators (IQIs) and spatial resolution targets.

Applications

The standard is primarily used in industrial sectors where radiographic non-destructive testing is vital, including:

  • Aerospace and Automotive: Ensuring the digitisation of X-ray films meets strict quality criteria for safety-critical components.
  • Manufacturing and Welding: Digitising films to document and analyze weld integrity, especially in pipelines and pressure vessels.
  • Metal Casting: Applying digital radiographic analysis on heavy or complex castings for defect detection.
  • Digital Archiving: Creating high-fidelity digital archives of original radiographic films, streamlining long-term data storage and retrieval.

Practical Value:

  • Ensures consistency and traceability in digital NDT records.
  • Facilitates compliance with international quality and safety regulations.
  • Reduces risk of information loss during digitisation, supporting reliable defect detection and quality assessments.

Related Standards

To fully implement the requirements of SIST EN ISO 14096-2:2026, users should be aware of and consult the following standards:

  • ISO 14096-1: Definitions and procedures for measurement of image quality parameters in digitisation systems.
  • ISO 17636-1: Non-destructive testing of welds-radiographic techniques using X- and gamma-rays with film.
  • EN 12681-1: Specification for the radiographic examination of castings using film techniques.
  • ISO 19232-5: Methods for determining image unsharpness and spatial resolution using duplex wire-type image quality indicators.
  • ISO 5579: General principles for radiographic testing of metallic materials using film and X- or gamma-rays.

Key Terms: Non-destructive testing, radiographic film digitisation, film digitisation quality classes, optical density, digital archiving, spatial resolution, density contrast sensitivity, ISO 14096-2, image quality indicators.

By adhering to SIST EN ISO 14096-2:2026, organizations can ensure a robust framework for the qualification and reliable use of radiographic film digitisation systems, supporting high-quality NDT operations across industries.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through
ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee
has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations,
governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely
with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are described
in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the different types
of ISO documents should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the editorial rules of the
ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www.iso.org/directives).

Introduction
Radiographic film systems are used for industrial inspection by X- and gamma rays. To apply modern means
of computer support for analysis, transmission and storage the information stored in the radiographic film
should be converted into digital data (digitisation). This document defines minimum requirements to ensure
that the relevant information for evaluation of the digital data is preserved during the film digitisation
process.
