SIST EN 62552-1:2020/A11:2024
(Amendment)Household refrigerating appliances - Characteristics and test methods - Part 1: General requirements
Household refrigerating appliances - Characteristics and test methods - Part 1: General requirements
This part of EN 62552 specifies the essential characteristics of household and similar
refrigerating appliances cooled by internal natural convection or forced air circulation, and
establishes test methods for checking these characteristics.
For the purposes of declaration, the tests defined in this part of IEC 62552 are considered to
be type tests to assess the fundamental design and operation of a refrigerating appliance.
This part of IEC 62552 does not define requirements for production sampling or conformity
assessment or certification.
This part of IEC 62552 does not define a regime for verification testing as this varies by
region and country. When verification of the performance of a refrigerating appliance of a
given type in relation to this standard is necessary, it is preferable, wherever practicable, that
all the tests specified be applied to a single unit. The tests can also be made individually for
the study of a particular characteristic.

Overview
SIST EN 62552-1:2020/A11:2024 is a European standard developed by the CLC (European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization) that specifies the essential characteristics and test methods for household refrigerating appliances. This part 1 of the EN 62552 series focuses on general requirements for refrigerating units cooled by either internal natural convection or forced air circulation. It establishes type test procedures designed to assess the fundamental design and operational performance of these appliances, serving as a basis for product declarations.
This amendment A11 (2024) updates EN 62552-1:2020, bringing enhancements in test enclosures, freezing capacity data reporting, and alignment with recent EU ecodesign and energy labeling regulations. It is part of a suite that includes EN 62552-2 and EN 62552-3, which cover performance and additional test methods.
Key benefits of this standard include:
- Defining essential test protocols for consistent appliance evaluation.
- Facilitating compliance with EU ecodesign and energy labeling requirements.
- Providing methodologies for measuring temperature stability, freezing capacity, and energy consumption.
- Supporting consumers and manufacturers in ensuring appliance reliability and energy efficiency.

In 3.1, “General terms and definitions” add the following term entry:
“3.1.Z12
mobile refrigerating appliance
refrigerating appliance that can be used where there is no access to the mains electricity grid and that uses
extra low-voltage electricity (< 120V DC) or fuel or both as the energy source for the refrigeration functionality,
including a refrigerating appliance that, in addition to extra low voltage electricity or fuel, or both, can be electric
mains operated”
3 Modifications to Clause 5, “Marking”
In 5.1, “Rating information”, replace list item e) with the following:
“e) for four-star appliances or appliances with four-star compartments the rated freezing capacity in kg/24 h”
4 Modifications to Annex B, “Preparation of an appliance for testing and general
measurement procedures”
In B.2.3.3 “Built-in appliances” replace the sixth paragraph with the following:
“If necessary, the test enclosure shall be provided with ventilating openings according to the instructions,
provided that these ventilation openings are limited to:
— the front side of the test enclosure for refrigerating appliances intended to be placed under a counter;
— the front, rear-bottom and top side of the test enclosure for other built-in appliances.
These limitations do not apply to absorption type of refrigerating appliances (where refrigeration is based on an
absorption process using heat as an energy source).”
In B.2.3.3 “Built-in appliances” replace the last paragraph with the following:
“To prevent airflow, the junction between the sides and back and between the sides and top and between sides
and bottom of the test enclosure shall be in close contact and sealed.”
In B.2.5.2 “Variable temperature compartments” replace list item d) with the following:
“d) For the energy consumption, water vapour condensation and ice-making capacity test (EN 62552-2 and
EN 62552-3), the variable temperature compartment shall operate in that setting which has the lowest operating
temperature for the energy consumption test as set out in Table 2 of EN 62552-2:2020”.
In B.2.5.2 “Variable temperature compartments” delete the sentence following list item d).
At the end of B.2.5.2 “Variable temperature compartments” add the following note:
“
Note Z1 This modification is aligned with the definition in IEC 62552-1:2015/AMD1:2020”
5 Modifications to Annex D, “Determination of compartment average air
temperatures”
Replace the content of D.2.4.6 “Low height compartments, sub-compartments or convenience features” with
the following content:
“For unfrozen compartments/sub-compartments or convenience features where the full height (h1) is 300 mm
or less and this is less than 0,7 of either the width (measured at the door sealing surface) or the maximum depth
(between the door sealing surface and back wall), the temperature sensors shall be located in positions as
shown in Figure D.3 b). In cases where the width or depth is greater than 700 mm, the positions shown in
Figure D.3 b) shall also be used if the ratio of full height (h1) to either depth or width is less than 0,6.
For frozen compartments/sub-compartments where the full height (h1) is 200 mm or less and the volume is
