Overview
EN IEC 63522-32:2025 (IEC 63522-32:2025) specifies standardized test methods for assessing acoustic noise related to electrical relays. The standard covers both noise emission (the sound produced by relays during operate, release and cycling) and noise immunity (the relay’s ability to function when exposed to external acoustic disturbances). It applies to all types of relays (electromechanical, reed, reed contacts/switches, solid‑state, time relays and combinations) and is intended for use during design verification, type testing and production evaluation.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Test types
- Noise emission: measure operating, releasing and cycling noise while the device under test (DUT) is energized, de‑energized and cycled.
- Noise immunity: expose DUT to high acoustic levels and verify functional performance.
- Measurement instrumentation
- Use a Class 2 sound level meter meeting IEC 61672‑1.
- Frequency weighting: A weighting per IEC 61672‑1.
- Test setup
- DUT placed on a soft plate (e.g., sponge or polyethylene foam, 50–55 Shore).
- Microphone distances: 5 cm or 10 cm (or manufacturer specified).
- Measuring directions: five directions shown in the standard (or the most critical direction specified by the manufacturer).
- Background noise: at least 10 dB lower than DUT noise level (anechoic chamber recommended).
- Cycling condition: 10 cycles per second.
- Coil conditions: rated voltage; tests with and/or without suppression diode as applicable.
- Noise immunity levels
- Three severity levels for 20 Hz–2 000 Hz for 1 hour:
- Level A = 140 dB +6 dB
- Level B = 150 dB +6 dB
- Level C = 160 dB +6 dB
- During immunity test: coil energized 30 min, de‑energized 30 min.
- Functional criterion: no contact state changes (opening/closing) exceeding 10 µs, unless otherwise specified by the manufacturer.
- Three severity levels for 20 Hz–2 000 Hz for 1 hour:
- Evaluation and reporting
- Acceptance limits and specific test conditions are typically specified by the manufacturer or application standards.
- Test report must record conditions, measured levels, directions, distances and any deviations.
Applications
- Product development and design verification for relays where audible noise affects user experience or system performance.
- Qualification testing for aerospace and other safety‑critical applications where acoustic disturbances may impair relay function.
- Manufacturing quality control and type testing to confirm compliance with product noise specifications.
- Acoustic benchmarking for equipment integrators, system designers and environmental compliance.
Who should use this standard
- Relay manufacturers and component designers
- Test laboratories and acoustics engineers
- Aerospace, automotive and railway qualification teams
- Compliance officers and product certification bodies

1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as "IEC Publication(s)"). Their
preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
