General Information
Overview
EN 17836:2024 - Fertilizers: Description of the forms of the physical unit (CEN) provides standardized terminology and definitions for the physical unit shapes of solid fertilizers. The standard covers organic, organo‑mineral and inorganic macronutrient fertilizers in solid form and gives clear descriptions of common product forms such as pellets, powder, prills and granules. EN 17836:2024 supports consistent product classification, sampling and regulatory communication across the EU and EFTA countries.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and definitions
- Defines key terms used for solid fertilizers: physical unit, solid form, organic fertilizer, organo‑mineral fertilizer, inorganic macronutrient fertilizer (consistent with Regulation (EU) 2019/1009).
- References normative vocabulary standards EN 12944‑1 and EN 12944‑2.
- Description of physical unit forms
- Pellets: cylindrical/hemispherical solid particles of various diameters and lengths.
- Powder: solid particles where at least 90% by mass passes a 1 mm sieve.
- Prills: roundish particles formed by cooling from a liquid phase.
- Granules: all other solid particle shapes/sizes not classed as pellets, powder or prills (includes flakes, crystals, tablets, chips, sticks, crumbs, pastilles, sharp granules).
- Informative annexes
- Annex A: visual examples of forms (pellets, powder, prills, granules).
- Annex ZA: relationship and presumption of conformity with Regulation (EU) 2019/1009, noting that citation in the Official Journal confers conformity for the covered requirements.
Applications and users
EN 17836:2024 is practical for:
- Fertilizer manufacturers - classifying product formats for formulation, packaging and quality control.
- Testing and inspection laboratories - consistent identification of representative sample units and test preparation.
- Regulatory authorities and conformity assessors - applying Regulation (EU) 2019/1009 requirements and assessing market placement.
- Distributors, importers and agronomists - accurate product information for labeling, handling and application guidance.
- Standards bodies and procurement teams - harmonized terminology for specifications and contracts.
Practical benefits include improved product comparability, clearer labeling, consistent sampling strategies and streamlined regulatory compliance across EU markets.
