Overview

EN 13709:2010 - Industrial valves: steel globe and globe stop and check valves - is a CEN European Standard that specifies design, materials, dimensions, pressure/temperature ratings and testing requirements for steel globe valves. It covers wrought, cast or fabricated valves in straight, angle or oblique patterns with flanged, butt-welding, socket-welding or threaded ends. The standard applies mainly to industrial and general-purpose applications and supports compliance with EU Directive 97/23/EC (PED).

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Nominal sizes (DN): covers DN 8 to DN 400 (with specific restrictions for DN 8, 10, 12 on certain flange classes and for socket/threaded ends limited to DN 8–DN 65).
  • Pressure designations: PN 10–PN 100 and Class 150–Class 600 for flanged and butt-weld ends; higher Class designations (Class 600, 800) and higher PN for socket/threaded ends as noted.
  • Materials and trim: body/bonnet material selection per EN 12516-1; internal wetted parts must have corrosion resistance at least equal to body/bonnet; stems require minimum corrosion resistance equivalent to ~13% chromium ferritic steel.
  • Dimensions and end connections: face-to-face and centre-to-face per EN 558; flange standards EN 1092-1 (PN) and EN 1759-1 (Class); butt-weld and socket-weld profiles per EN 12627 and EN 12760; threaded forms per ISO 7-1 / EN ISO 228-1 / ASME B1.20.1.
  • Functional requirements and testing: shell design strength (tabulation, calculation or experimental methods), flow characteristics, allowable differential pressure, seat tightness, and valve sizing of operating elements. Test procedures referenced include EN 12266-1 and EN 12266-2.
  • Welding and QA: welding procedures to EN ISO 15607; welder/operator qualifications per EN 287-1 and EN 1418; NDT and heat treatment requirements where applicable.
  • Marking, documentation and purchaser information: declaration of compliance, marking per EN 19, and Annex A guidance on information to be supplied by the purchaser.

Practical applications

EN 13709:2010 is used to:

  • Define design and manufacturing requirements for steel globe valves used in pipelines and process systems.
  • Specify acceptance criteria and test procedures for procurement and quality control.
  • Ensure compatibility with piping systems through standardized dimensions and end connections. Typical application sectors include process industries, power generation, water and utilities, chemical and petrochemical plants - essentially any industry needing reliable multi-turn shut-off or check functionality in steel valves.

Who should use this standard

  • Valve manufacturers and welders (product design, fabrication, testing)
  • Mechanical, piping and procurement engineers (specification and selection)
  • Inspection, QA and maintenance teams (acceptance testing and compliance)
  • Project managers and regulatory compliance officers assessing PED conformity
