3.1 Basic terms
3.1.1
base
building element which
provides the support for a
screed
3.1.2
bitumen emulsion cement
screed
screed where the binder
consists of a bitumen
emulsion and a hydraulic
cement
3.1.3
calcium sulfate screed
screed where the binder is
calcium sulfate
Note 1 to entry: Anhydrite screeds
are made from anhydrite binder.
3.1.4
cementitious hard
aggregate screed
cementitious screed where the
aggregates are hard
aggregates
3.1.5
cementitious screed
screed where the binder
consists of a cement
3.1.6
flooring
uppermost layer of a floor that
is designed to provide a
wearing surface
3.1.7
hard aggregate wearing
screed
heavy duty wearing screed
which incorporates hard
abrasion resistant aggregate
Note 1 to entry: Traditionally in
UK called granolithic concrete
flooring.
3.1.8
lightweight screed
screed where the hardened
dry density after 28 days is
less than 1400 kg/m
3.1.9
magnesite screed
screed where the binder
consists of magnesium oxide
and an aqueous solution of
magnesium chloride
Note 1 to entry: Magnesite
screeds having a density ≤ 1 600
are called
kg/m
"Steinholzestrich" in Germany
and "xylolithes" in French.
3.1.10
mastic asphalt screed
screed where the binder is
bitumen
3.1.11
polymer modified
cementitious screed
screed where the binder
consists of a cement and
which is modified by the
addition of polymer
dispersion or re-dispersible
polymer powder
3.1.12
screed material
composition comprising
binder, aggregates and
possibly liquid to ensure the
setting of the binder and in
some cases admixtures and/or
additives
3.1.13
screed
layer or layers of screed
material laid in situ, directly
onto a base, bonded or
unbonded, or onto an
intermediate layer or
insulating layer, to obtain one
or more of the following
purposes:
- to obtain a defined level;
- to carry the final flooring;
- to provide a wearing surface
Note 1 to entry: Traditionally in
the UK and Ireland, screeds used
as wearing surfaces were called
toppings or in-situ flooring. The
German term "Estrich" has been
used for screed material as well as
for hardened screed. In German
Swiss, screeds are also called
"Unterlagsböden".
3.1.14
synthetic resin screed
screed based on synthetic
resin as the binder where a
flowing or trowellable
composition is converted in
situ to a solid layer by a
chemical reaction of the
synthetic resin
3.2 Components
3.2.1
additive
material added to a screed
material to modify the
chemical and/or physical
properties
Note 1 to entry: The contents by
volume have to be taken into
account in mix design.
3.2.2
admixture
material added in small
quantity during the mixing
process to modify the
properties of the screed
material in the fresh and/or
hardened state
3.2.3
aggregate
granular particles for screed
materials, for example: sand,
crushed rocks, gravel, crushed
anhydrite, etc.
Note 1 to entry: Aggregates
smaller than 63 µm are called
fillers.
3.2.4
air entraining admixture
admixture that allows a
controlled quantity of small,
uniformly distributed air
bubbles to be incorporated
during mixing of screed
material and which remain
after hardening
3.2.5
bonding agent
fluid material, used separately
or mixed with binder to form a
slurry, applied as a thin layer
to improve adhesion of a
screed to a base
Note 1 to entry: In Germany the
bonding agents are also called
"Haftbrücke".
3.2.6
curing compound
product applied to a newly
laid screed to reduce loss of
moisture by evaporation
3.2.7
hard aggregate
aggregate with high abrasion
resistance
3.2.8
insulating material
material placed within a floor
structure to provide either
acoustic and/or thermal
insulation
3.2.9
lightweight aggregate
aggregates having a particle
density not exceeding 2000
kg/m or a loose bulk density
not exceeding 1 200 kg/m
3.2.10
plasticizing admixture
admixture which without
affecting the consistency,
permits a reduction in water
content of a screed material,
or without affecting the water
content increases the flow or
which produces both effects
simultaneously
3.2.11
primer
fluid material, used when
required, having the function
to make surface fit to apply
next layer
3.2.12
reinforcement
bars, wire, mesh or fibres
within the screed
3.2.13
set retarding admixture
