Overview

prEN 1063 - "Glass in building - Security glazing - Testing and classification of resistance against bullet attack" (CEN draft, 2019) defines performance requirements and test methods for the classification of bullet-resistant glazing used in buildings. The standard covers single- and multi-layer glass, laminated glass/plastic composites and some insulating glass units intended for interior and exterior use. It specifies ballistic test conditions (handguns, rifles, shotguns), specimen preparation, test apparatus and acceptance criteria to assign BR, SG and KS resistance classes.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope: Applies to glazing products (assuming correct fixing) resisting attack by handguns, rifles and shotguns. Protection depends on both the glazing product and its design/fixing.
  • Classification scheme:
    • BR1–BR7 for handguns and rifles, with increasing attacking power.
    • SG1–SG2 for shotguns (slugs).
    • KS class added for certain rifle ammunition (new in the 2019 draft).
    • Extension rules allow higher classes to be declared for lower classes without retesting (e.g., BR7 → KS → BR1–BR4).
  • Performance requirements:
    • No perforation of the specimen by projectile or fragments.
    • Two outcome marks: NS (No Splinters - no witness-foil perforation) and S (Splinters - witness-foil perforated by splinters).
  • Test method essentials:
    • Three test pieces per class (500 ±10 mm square recommended).
    • Mounting in a rigid frame with polychloroprene rubber seal strips; clear target ~440 × 440 mm.
    • Use of a witness foil and splinter collecting box behind the specimen to detect rear-face fragments.
    • Ballistic parameters (calibre, projectile mass, velocity, muzzle distance, striking pattern) are defined in tables; velocity measured within 2.5 m of the attack face.
  • Documentation: Detailed test reports and optional test report summaries are required.

Applications and who uses it

  • Manufacturers of security glazing, laminated glass and glass/plastic composites use prEN 1063 to design and certify products for ballistic resistance.
  • Testing laboratories and certification bodies apply the specified test methods and report formats.
  • Specifiers, façade and structural engineers, architects, security consultants and building owners use the classification to select glazing for high-risk facades, secure entrances, government buildings, banks, embassies and other protected facilities.
  • Authorities and procurement teams reference the standard when defining security requirements for buildings.

Related standards

  • EN 1063:1999 - previous edition to be superseded by prEN 1063:2019.
  • EN ISO 868 - referenced for durometer (Shore) hardness of polychloroprene seal strips used in mounting.

European foreword
This document (prEN 1063:2019) has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 129 “Glass in
building”, the secretariat of which is held by NBN.
This document is currently submitted to the CEN Enquiry.
This document will supersede EN 1063:1999.
The main changes compared to the previous edition are:
a) A new ammunition was added for class BR3;
b) A new class was created for rifles (KS);
c) Extension rules have been clearly defined.
Introduction
The main requirement for bullet-resistant glazing is to prevent the penetration of projectiles from
various types of weapon. The classification of bullet-resistance of glazing in this document is a technical
classification, based on common weapons and ammunition, in order of attacking power. As the variety
of weapons and ammunition does not allow them all to be taken into account, a selection had to be
made that covers most weapons and ammunition. The choice of bullet-resistant glazing is established
by the user for each individual case.
1 Scope
This document specifies performance requirements and test methods for the classification of the bullet-
resistance of glass (consisting of one or more layers of glass) and glass/plastic composites.
NOTE 1 The term “bullet-resistant glazing” applies to products that have the obvious characteristics of glass,
but it is understood to include also laminated products of glass and plastics and in some saces, insulating glass
units.
This document applies to:
— attack by handguns, rifles and shotguns;
— glazing in buildings, for interior and exterior use;
— the glazing product itself, assuming proper fixing;
NOTE 2 The protection provided by bullet-resistant glazing depends not only on the product itself, but also
upon the design and fixing of the glass.
2 Normative references
The following documents are referred to in the text in such a way that some or all of their content
constitutes requirements of this document. For dated references, only the edition cited applies. For
undated references, the latest edition of the referenced document (including any amendments) applies.
