Overview
SIST EN 1063:2000 is a European standard developed by CEN (European Committee for Standardization) that specifies the performance requirements and test methods for classifying the bullet resistance of glazing materials used in buildings. This international standard applies to glass and plastic composite security glazing designed to protect against ballistic attacks. The standard ensures a consistent, reliable framework for evaluating and specifying bullet-resistant glazing products, contributing to improved building security and occupant safety.
Key Topics
- Classification of Bullet Resistance: EN 1063 defines a clear rating system that determines the level of protection offered by different security glazing types. This includes bullet-resistant glass and glass/plastic composites.
- Testing Procedures: The standard outlines rigorous test methods used to verify the bullet resistance of glazing materials. These procedures ensure reliable classification through repeatable and objective testing.
- Performance Requirements: Detailed criteria for the acceptance of security glazing in terms of its resistance to various types and calibers of ballistic threats.
- Labelling and Documentation: Requirements for marking, documentation, and traceability of products that have been tested and classified according to the standard.
- Product Applicability: Guidance on the selection and use of bullet-resistant glass for different building security applications.
Applications
SIST EN 1063:2000 is widely used in the design and specification of security glazing for:
- Banks and Financial Institutions: Enhancing protection for staff and assets against armed attacks.
- Government and Military Buildings: Providing high-level security for sensitive locations and personnel.
- Retail Spaces and Jewelers: Safeguarding valuable goods and employees from violent theft attempts.
- Reception Areas and Ticket Counters: Ensuring the safety of frontline staff in high-risk environments.
- Correctional Facilities and Police Stations: Reinforcing secure areas to prevent breaches through ballistic threats.
- Public Transport Hubs: Increasing resilience of key infrastructure such as airports, train stations, or embassies.
- Private Residences and Safe Rooms: Offering options for homeowners seeking elevated security levels.
Using security glazing that meets EN 1063 ensures compliance with recognized European best practices and can support risk management, insurance, and planning requirements for buildings where ballistic attack risk is a concern.
