Overview
prEN ISO 6506-3 (ISO/DIS 6506-3:2023) - Metallic materials - Brinell hardness test - Part 3: Calibration of reference blocks - specifies the method and metrological requirements for calibrating Brinell hardness reference blocks used for the indirect verification of Brinell hardness testing machines. The document defines manufacturing, calibration-machine performance, calibration procedure, marking, uncertainty evaluation and validity periods to ensure metrological traceability of Brinell reference blocks.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and purpose: Calibration method for reference blocks used with Brinell hardness testing machines (ISO 6506 series).
- Manufacture of reference blocks: Blocks must be specially manufactured for homogeneity and stability; minimum thickness depends on ball size (examples: 16 mm for 10 mm balls at HBW ≤150; 12 mm for 10 mm balls at HBW >150; 12 mm for 5 mm balls). Blocks shall be non‑magnetic (steel blocks recommended to be demagnetized).
- Surface geometry & roughness: Flatness, parallelism and permissible surface roughness are specified and vary with indenter ball diameter.
- Calibration machine performance:
- Direct verification intervals ≤ 12 months.
- Force measurements: each test force measured ≥ 3 times using an ISO 376 elastic proving device (class 0.5 or better).
- Indenter specifications and measurement traceability to SI.
- Indentation diameter measuring system resolution: 0.002 mm for 5 mm and 10 mm balls; 0.001 mm for balls <5 mm. The device must be calibrated at a minimum of five points across its range.
- Testing cycle timing: time-to-full-force (7 ± 1) s and dwell time (14 ± 1) s; timing uncertainty < ±0.5 s.
- Maximum indenter approach velocities defined per ball size.
- Calibration procedure & sampling: Calibrate at (23 ± 5) °C; make at least five indentations uniformly distributed across each reference block (one designated as a reference indentation). Procedures for evaluating non‑uniformity and the uncertainty of the mean hardness value are given (maximum permissible non‑uniformity depends on indentation diameter and hardness; for HBW < 225 the limit is 2%).
- Marking & documentation: Blocks must be marked with mean hardness (e.g., “348 HBW 5/750”), supplier, serial number, calibration lab, thickness and calibration year; accompanied by a calibration certificate with uncertainty and indentation data.
- Validity: Recommended calibration validity up to five years (2–3 years for aluminium and copper alloys).
Applications and users
- Laboratories performing hardness calibrations, quality control and metallurgical testing.
- Calibration laboratories that supply Brinell reference blocks and certificates.
- Manufacturers of testing machines and forensic/materials engineers needing traceable Brinell measurements.
- Use cases: routine verification of Brinell hardness testers, supplier quality assurance, material conformity testing and instrument accreditation.

ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out
through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical
committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International
organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of
electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are
described in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular the different approval criteria needed for the
different types of ISO documents should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the
editorial rules of the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www.iso.org/directives).

verification of Brinell hardness testing machines as described in ISO 6506-2.
The procedures necessary to ensure metrological traceability of the calibration machine are also
specified.

3 Manufacture of reference blocks
3.1 The block shall be specially manufactured for use as a reference block.
NOTE Attention is drawn to the need to use a manufacturing process which will give the necessary
homogeneity, stability of structure, and uniformity of surface hardness.
3.2 Each metal block to be calibrated shall be of a thickness not less than
— 16 mm for 10 mm balls, for HBW ≤ 150
— 12 mm for 10 mm balls, for HBW > 150
— 12 mm for 5 mm balls, or
— 6 mm for smaller balls.
3.3 The reference blocks shall be free of magnetism. It is recommended that the manufacturer shall
ensure that the blocks, if of steel, have been demagnetized at the end of the manufacturing process.
ISO/DIS 6506-3:2023(E)
3.4 The flatness of the two surfaces and the parallelism of the reference block shall be in accordance
with Table 1.

Sampling length: l = 0,80 mm (see ISO 4287).
3.5 The test surface shall be free from scratches which interfere with the measurement of the
indentations (see Table 1).
3.6 To verify that no material is subsequently removed from the reference block, the thickness at the
time of calibration shall be marked on it to the nearest 0,1 mm, or an identifying mark shall be made on
the test surface [see 8.1, item e)].
4 Calibration machine
4.1 In addition to fulfilling the general requirements specified in ISO 6506-2:2014, Clause 3, the
calibration machine shall also meet the requirements given in 4.2 to 4.7.
4.2 The machine shall be verified directly in intervals not exceeding 12 months.
Direct verification involves
a) measurement of the test forces,
b) measurement of the diameter, hardness, and density of the indenter ball,
c) calibration of the indentation diameter measuring device, and
d) measurement of the testing cycle, if this is not possible, at least the force versus time behaviour.
4.3 The instruments used for verification and calibration shall be traceable to the SI.
4.4 Each test force shall be measured a minimum of three t
