Leisure accommodation vehicles - Liquid fuel heating systems - Part 1: Caravans and caravan holiday homes

This document specifies safety requirements for installing oil-fired heating systems in caravans and caravan holiday homes. It applies to liquid fuel heating systems using oil fuels as defined in EN 13878.
NOTE   Safety ventilation requirements for leisure accommodation vehicles are specified in EN 721.

Dieses Dokument legt sicherheitstechnische Anforderungen für den Einbau von ölbetriebenen Heizungssystemen in Caravans und Mobilheimen fest. Es gilt für mit flüssigem Brennstoff betriebene Heizungssysteme, bei denen Heizöl nach der Definition in EN 13878 Verwendung findet.
ANMERKUNG   Anforderungen an die Sicherheitslüftung von bewohnbaren Freizeitfahrzeugen werden in EN 721 festgelegt.

Le présent document spécifie les exigences de sécurité relatives à l'installation des systèmes de chauffage au fioul dans les caravanes et les résidences mobiles. Il s'applique aux systèmes de chauffage à combustible liquide utilisant des fiouls domestiques tels que définis dans l'EN 13878.
NOTE   Les exigences de ventilation de sécurité pour les véhicules habitables de loisirs sont spécifiées dans l'EN 721.

EN 722-1:2004 (CEN) - "Leisure accommodation vehicles - Liquid fuel heating systems - Part 1: Caravans and caravan holiday homes" specifies safety requirements for installing oil‑fired (liquid fuel) heating systems in caravans and caravan holiday homes. Approved by CEN in July 2004 and superseding EN 722-1:1996, the standard covers installation, components, and safety features to ensure safe operation of liquid fuel heating systems as defined by EN 13878.

• Oil tanks
  • Tanks must allow filling/draining from outside and, if separate, be in a ventilated fuel storage compartment with bottom drainage.
  • Capacity limits: maximum 50 L for caravans, 200 L for caravan holiday homes.
  • Stopcock required at each tank outlet and must be readily accessible.
  • Measures to prevent fuel spillage inside or beneath the vehicle when filling.
• Heating appliances
  • For caravans: only room‑sealed appliances permitted.
  • For caravan holiday homes: appliances drawing combustion air from inside the vehicle are allowed.
  • Combustion products must be ducted to the outside; evacuation under the vehicle is prohibited.
  • Flue terminals: sited per manufacturer; minimum clearances - not within 500 mm of refuelling/breather outlets and not within 300 mm of habitation ventilators or opening windows. If a terminal is directly below an opening window, automatic shut‑off when the window is open is required.
  • Appliances must be accessible for inspection, service and replacement.
• Fuel pipes and joints
  • Acceptable materials: seam‑welded or seamless steel, stainless steel, copper, or manufacturer‑recommended materials.
  • No soft‑soldered joints; use flat‑faced washered or compression joints; protect against corrosion and mechanical damage.
• Flues
  • Non‑combustible, sealed flue pipes; remain secure during motion; weatherproofing and caps required.
  • Inspections must be possible via removable panels or mirrors/feel.
• Fire valve
  • Thermally operated fire valve must be fitted to shut off fuel supply on overheating.
• User's handbook
  • Manufacturer must provide operation and maintenance instructions in the language of first sale, including fuel specification and suitability for use while in motion.

This document (EN 722-1:2004) has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 245 "Leisure
accommodation vehicles", the secretariat of which is held by BSI.
This European Standard shall be given the status of a national standard, either by publication of an
identical text or by endorsement, at the latest by March 2005, and conflicting national standards shall
be withdrawn at the latest by March 2005.
This document supersedes EN 722-1:1996.
According to the CEN/CENELEC Internal Regulations, the national standards organizations of the
