This European standard specifies general requirements for construction and testing, and specifies the test methods that apply to personal, portable, transportable and fixed apparatus intended for the direct detection and direct concentration measurement of a toxic gas or vapour in workplace air. It applies to apparatus whose primary purpose is to indicate the presence of a toxic gas or vapour in the atmophere with a view to providing an indication or warning of the presence of a toxic hazard within a time of response as specified in prEN 45544-2 and prEN 45544-3.

Diese Europäische Norm legt die allgemeinen Anforderungen an Konstruktion und Prüfung und die Prüfverfahren für personenbezogene, tragbare, transportable und ortsfeste Geräte für die direkte Detektion und direkte Konzentrationsmessung eines toxischen Gases oder Dampfes in der Arbeitsplatzatmosphäre fest. Sie gilt für Geräte, deren Hauptaufgabe es ist, auf die Anwesenheit eines toxischen Gases oder Dampfes in der Luft hinzuweisen und eine Anzeige oder eine Warnung vor der Anwesenheit eines toxischen Gases innerhalb der in prEN 45544-2 und prEN 45544-3 festgelegten Anstiegzeit abzugeben.

La présente norme européenne définit les exigences générales pour la construction et les méthodes d'essai des appareillages individuels, portables, transportables et fixes pour détecter directement une vapeur ou un gaz toxique et mesurer directement leur concentration dans l'atmosphere des lieux de travail. Elle s'applique aux appareillages dont le but premier est de signaler la présence de vapeur ou de gaz toxiques dans l'atmosphere et d'indiquer ou d'avertir d'un danger de pollution dans un délai de réponse tel que spécifié dans le prEN 45544-2 et le prEN 45544-3.

— used in the domestic environment,
— used in environmental air pollution monitoring,
— used for the measurement of combustible gases and vapours related to the risk of explosion.
It also does not apply to open-path (line of sight) area monitors.
For apparatus used for sensing the presence of multiple gases, this European Standard applies only to the
detection of toxic gas or vapour.

- Type SM (Safety Monitoring) ‘general gas detection’ equipment: For general gas detection applications (e.g. safety warning, leak detection), the performance requirements are focused on alarm signalling. The upper limit of measurement will be defined by the manufacturer according to the intended use of the equipment. In general, the requirements for accuracy will be higher for Type HM equipment than for Type SM equipment. The same equipment may meet the requirements of both Type HM and Type SM. For equipment used for sensing the presence of multiple gases this document applies only to the detection of toxic gas or vapour.
This document is not applicable to equipment:
- with samplers and concentrators such as sorbents or paper tape having an irreversible indication;
- used for the measurement of gases and vapours related to the risk of explosion;
- used for the measurement of oxygen; – used only in laboratories for analysis or measurement;
- used only for process measurement purposes;
- used in the domestic environment;
- used in environmental air pollution monitoring;
- used for open-path (line of sight) area gas measurement;
- used for ventilation control in car parks or tunnels.
