Overview
SIST EN ISO 8130-14:2019 - Coating powders - Part 14: Vocabulary is an international standard that defines specialized terminology used in the coating powders industry. Published by the Slovenian Institute for Standardization (SIST), this document aligns with EN ISO 8130-14:2019 and is developed under the guidance of ISO Technical Committee 35 for Paints and Varnishes. The standard is essential for professionals, manufacturers, and stakeholders in the powder coatings sector to ensure clear and consistent communication across industries and regions.
By standardizing vocabulary, SIST EN ISO 8130-14:2019 supports quality management, regulatory compliance, and technical collaboration in the field of coating powders. For a broader set of terms related to paints and varnishes, it refers users to ISO 4618.
Key Topics
The vocabulary outlined in SIST EN ISO 8130-14:2019 covers critical concepts and terminology relevant to:
- Coating Powder Composition: Terms such as coating powder, hybrid coating powder, and powder coating describe the formulation and categories of powder coatings.
- Particle Characteristics: Includes definitions for particle size, particle size distribution, fines, oversize, particle strength, and agglomeration.
- Application Techniques: Terms like electrostatic powder spraying, electrostatic fluidized bed, and tribo-charging explain the methods for applying coating powders.
- Powder Handling: Documents concepts such as powder flow rate, compaction, powder blocking, pourability, and reclaimed powder.
- Performance and Safety: Provides definitions for storage stability, shelf life, gelation, lower explosion limit, back ionization, and Faraday cage effect.
- Process Control: Covers technical terms including charge-to-mass ratio, classification, deposition efficiency, and sieve blinding.
This comprehensive set of definitions streamlines industry communication, training, product specification, and regulatory submissions.
Applications
SIST EN ISO 8130-14:2019 is practically valuable for a wide range of uses in the coating powders industry:
- Manufacturers and Suppliers: Ensure precise product labeling, technical datasheets, and safety documentation using harmonized terms.
- Quality Control and Testing: Supports laboratory professionals in standardizing test methods and interpreting results by providing universally accepted definitions.
- Product Development and R&D: Assists formulation chemists and engineers in describing new material characteristics with clarity.
- Regulatory Compliance: Eases the preparation of regulatory submissions and technical files by matching global terminology expectations.
- End Users and Specifiers: Facilitates accurate communication between suppliers and customers, reducing technical misunderstandings in procurement and installation.
- Training and Education: Ideal for developing training materials and certification programs for coating powder technologies.
By following the vocabulary set out in SIST EN ISO 8130-14:2019, organizations ensure consistency and compliance in technical documentation and communication.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out
through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical
committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International
organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of
electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are
described in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the
different types of ISO documents should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the
editorial rules of the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www .iso .org/directives).
