Overview

EN 13150:2020 - Workbenches for laboratories in educational institutions - specifies dimensions, safety and durability requirements and test methods for workbenches, movable science tables and workbench shelves intended for use in schools and similar educational laboratories. Published by CEN, this European standard is limited to educational settings and explicitly excludes industrial, university/research laboratory furniture and fume cupboards. It also excludes fire-resistance, work-surface chemical resistance, electrical safety and building media services (water, gas, compressed air) requirements.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope & exclusions
    • Applies only to educational institution laboratory workbenches; not for industrial or university labs and not for fume cupboards.
    • Fire safety, surface resistance and electrical/media services requirements are outside this standard.
  • Dimensions
    • Specified nominal work surface heights (examples): sitting 740 ± 10 mm (600 mm for primary schools), standing 850 or 900 mm for secondary schools or use with high stools.
    • Clear work surface depth: 600–900 mm.
    • Maximum shelf height above workbench for depth ≥ 600 mm: 1 750 mm.
    • Legroom requirements reference EN 527-1 and EN 1729-1.
  • Safety
    • Minimize injury risk: no sharp edges/burrs; capped open ends on tubular components.
    • Moving parts must maintain safe gaps (<8 mm or >25 mm) to avoid shearing/pinching.
    • Glass components meeting the standard’s threshold must comply with EN 12600 classification.
    • Work surfaces retaining liquids must provide retaining edges (minimum capacity 5 L/m²).
  • Stability, strength and durability
    • Stability and load tests reference EN 1730 and EN 16122.
    • Representative safety test parameters include: horizontal static load (600 N, ×10), main-surface vertical load (2 000 N, ×10), ancillary-surface load (500 N), horizontal impact (50 kg drop from 40 mm), stability under vertical load (1 000 N).
    • Durability cycles include: height-adjustment 5 000 cycles (50 kg), horizontal and vertical durability 10 000 cycles, castor durability 2 000 cycles.
    • Surface gloss (reflection) requirements per EN 13722 to limit specular reflections (recommend silky matt finish).
  • Test conditions & tolerances
    • Tests performed on assembled furniture, indoor ambient conditions; tolerances: masses ±0.5%, dimensions ±1.0 mm, angles ±2°, forces ±5%.

Practical applications

  • Use this standard when designing, specifying, manufacturing or procuring school laboratory benches, science-room tables and shelving to ensure safety, dimensional compatibility and durability.
  • Relevant for manufacturers, laboratory furniture specifiers, school facility managers, procurement officers, safety assessors and test laboratories.

Related standards

  • EN 1730 (stability, strength and durability test methods)
  • EN 16121 / EN 16122 (storage furniture requirements and tests)
  • EN 1729-1 (educational furniture dimensions)
  • EN 527-1 (work table dimensions)
