ISO/TC 94/SC 13/WG 5 - Protective clothing against mechanical action
Vêtements de protection contre les sollicitations mécaniques
General Information
This document specifies a tomodynamometer cut test method and related calculations, for use on materials and assemblies designed for protective clothing, including gloves. The test determines resistance to cutting by sharp edges, such as knives, sheet metal parts, swarf, glass, bladed tools and castings. When this document is cited as a test method in a material or product requirement standard, that standard contains the necessary information to permit the application of this document to the particular product. This test does not provide data on the resistance to penetration by pointed objects such as needles and thorns, or the point of sharp-edged blades. The test described in this document is not considered suitable for testing materials made from chain mail and metal plates. The text of this document does not include provisions for the safeguard of the operator.

This document specifies requirements and test methods for assessing the resistance to cutting of gaiters by hand-held chainsaws and other properties. It includes a requirement and a test method for assessing the strength of underfoot straps of gaiters. This document is applicable to gaiters used in conjunction with safety footwear with a steel toecap conforming to ISO 20345 design "C" or "D". These gaiters are designed to be used only in association with a defined model of footwear and tested together. NOTE These products are intended, but are not limited, to be used in combination with a defined model of orthopaedic footwear. This document does not apply to gaiters intended for use in situations where there is a significant risk of tripping, such as tree climbing or in forests.

ISO 13999-2:2003 specifies requirements for the design, cut resistance, penetration resistance, and ergonomic characteristics of cut resistant gloves, arm guards and protective sleeves made of materials other than chain mail and rigid metal and plastics. They provide less cut and stab protection than the products specified in ISO 13999-1:2003 and are intended to be used only in work where the knife is not finely pointed or it is used only to cut away from the hand and arm.

ISO 13998:2003 is applicable to protective aprons, trousers and vests for use with hand knives, and to other garments which provide similar protection to parts of the body in accidents. It specifies requirements for the design, penetration resistance, cut resistance, sizing, ergonomic characteristics, innocuousness, water permeability, cleaning and disinfection, marking and information to be supplied by the manufacturer for users of protective aprons, trousers and vests. It also describes the classification of protection levels and appropriate test methods.

This European Standard specifies minimum requirements and test methods for protective clothing for abrasive blasting operations and for hand protection, for the treatment of surfaces with granular abrasives propelled by compressed air or by mechanical means. The protection against substances that develop during the blasting operation as well as connections between the protective clothing and the respiratory protective device are also covered. This European Standard does not apply to steam blasting, jet blasting and flame blasting operations.

This part of ISO 13999 specifies an impact cut test for use on fabric, leather and other materials used in protective clothing materials, gloves and arm guards. This test assesses the resistance of the test specimen to cutting by a sharp, straight knife-edge after the point of the test knife has perforated the test specimen. The length of the cut produced by the particular impact energy is proportional to the depth of penetration of the knife, which is easily measured. This test method provides information about the resistance of the product to stabbing cuts, slashing cuts, shearing cuts and impact cuts by acute edged objects that are not necessarily sharp. Abrasion by coarse sharp abraders such as road surfaces, concrete building blocks, or rough metal castings, is the superimposition of numerous small cuts. The results from this test give a good prediction of the resistance of products to these types of harsh abrasion. This test does not provide information about the resistance of the product to penetration by thorns or needles. Annex A of this part of ISO 13999 gives recommendations for the specification of impact cut tests on materials and products such as gloves and arm guards and gives the list of information which should be specified in the product standard in order to be able to apply this test.
