Overview
EN ISO 19225:2017/A1:2019 is an amendment to the international and European standard for underground mining machines, specifically addressing safety requirements for mobile extracting machines at the face - notably shearer loaders and plough systems. Approved by CEN in September 2019, this amendment updates noise measurement procedures, normative references, and informative material (including Annex ZA) to align the standard with EU regulatory needs and to clarify test and reporting methods.
Key Topics and Technical Requirements
- Scope: Safety requirements for shearer loaders and plough systems used in underground mining faces.
- Normative references added: ISO 4871 and ISO 11201:2010, ISO 11202:2010, ISO 11204:2010 (acoustics / noise emission standards).
- Noise measurement (A-weighted levels):
- Shearer loaders: measurement sequence defined as a 5 m movement, then 10 m in the opposite direction, and 5 m back. Equivalent A‑weighted sound pressure (LpAeq) is measured with integrating devices at specified positions in three consecutive runs (or simultaneously with three devices). At least three separate measurements per position; results averaged arithmetically.
- Plough systems: because operators are remote, noise emissions of plough drives are measured at surface without moving parts. Measurements at nominal/working speed with cooling systems active; testing at highest drive speed. LpAeq is measured in two consecutive runs (or simultaneously with two devices) at gearbox and motor positions; at least three measurements, each ≥15 s; results averaged.
- Annex changes: deletion and renumbering of Annex A clauses (A.3 removed; A.4 → A.3; A.5 → A.4, etc.), clarifications to installation/mounting and reporting requirements.
- Regulatory alignment: Annex ZA maps the standard’s clauses to essential requirements of Directive 2006/42/EC (Machinery Directive), enabling a presumption of conformity where cited in the Official Journal.
Applications and Who Uses This Standard
- Manufacturers of shearer loaders and plough systems - for design verification, noise performance and safety compliance.
- Test laboratories and acoustic engineers - to perform standardized noise emission tests and prepare reports.
- Safety and conformity assessors - to evaluate machines against EN ISO 19225 and the Machinery Directive requirements.
- Mine operators and maintenance teams - for selecting equipment, managing operator exposure, and ensuring safe maintenance/access procedures.
- Regulatory bodies and certification organizations - for harmonized assessment, national adoption, and referencing in conformity assessments.
Related Standards
- ISO 4871, ISO 11201:2010, ISO 11202:2010, ISO 11204:2010 (acoustics / noise emission testing) - now referenced in the amendment for noise declaration and verification procedures.
- Directive 2006/42/EC (Machinery Directive) - Annex ZA provides clause-to-requirement correspondence supporting EU conformity.
