Glass in building - Security glazing - Testing and classification of resistance against explosion pressure
This European Standard specifies a test method, performance requirements and classification for explosion pressure resistant glazing for use in buildings.
The explosion pressure resistant glazing is intended to offer resistance against explosives with respect to human safety.
This European Standard concerns a method of test against blast waves generated using a shock tube or similar facility to simulate a high explosive detonation.
The classification is only valid for tested glass sizes of about 1 m2. Based on theoretical considerations and/or experimental work, the results can be used for estimating the explosion-pressure-resistance of other glass sizes.
NOTE 1 The resistance classes are not assigned to specific situations. For each individual case the individual who specifies, if necessary with the help of experts in the field of explosion, should be consulted.
NOTE 2 The protection provided by explosion-resistant-glazing not only depends on the product itself, but also on the design and fixing of the glass.
Steklo v gradbeništvu - Varnostna zasteklitev - Preskušanje in razvrščanje odpornosti proti zvočnemu tlaku pri eksploziji

Overview
EN 13541:2012 - "Glass in building - Security glazing - Testing and classification of resistance against explosion pressure" is a CEN European Standard that defines a laboratory test method, performance requirements and a classification system for explosion pressure resistant glazing (blast-resistant/security glazing) used in buildings. The standard specifies shock-tube based blast testing to simulate high-explosive detonation effects, and assigns classes (ER1–ER4) based on the reflected peak overpressure, positive specific impulse and overpressure duration.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Test method and classification for glazing intended to protect human safety against explosive blast loads; classification is valid for tested glass sizes of about 1 m².
- Test method: Use of a shock tube or similar device to generate a plane shock wave normal to the specimen’s attack face to simulate a spherical detonation.
- Classification basis: Maximum reflected overpressure (Pr), positive specific impulse (i+) and duration of the positive overpressure phase (t+). Four classes (ER1 to ER4) are defined with increasing load levels.
- Specimen requirements:
- Nominal dimensions: 1100 × 900 mm (± 5 mm).
- Sample size: three test pieces per attack face and per class (one extra recommended for transport damage).
- Performance criteria:
- No through-holes allowed after test.
- No openings between frame and specimen that penetrate full thickness.
- Test pieces achieving a class automatically achieve all lower classes.
- Optional notation S/NS to indicate splintering (S) or no splintering (NS) of the protected rear face.
- Test apparatus and conditions:
- Rigid specimen holder, clamped on all edges over (50 ± 10) mm with rubber strips (50 ± 2 mm × 4 ± 1 mm; 50 ± 10 IRHD).
- Clamping pressure: (14 ± 3) N/cm².
- Specimen temperature: surface/mass (18 ± 5) °C; stored at this temperature ≥12 h prior to test.
- Measuring devices must determine reflected overpressure-time history with ±5% accuracy.
Applications and users
EN 13541:2012 is used by:
- Glazing manufacturers and product developers to design and certify blast-resistant glazing.
- Independent testing laboratories performing shock-tube blast tests.
- Façade engineers, architects and security consultants specifying explosion pressure resistant glazing for critical infrastructure, government buildings, transportation hubs and high-risk sites.
