Overview
EN ISO 16396-2:2022 - Plastics - Polyamide (PA) moulding and extrusion materials - Part 2: Preparation of test specimens and determination of properties - specifies standardized procedures for preparing test specimens and measuring the properties of polyamide (PA) moulding and extrusion materials. Published by CEN and identical to ISO 16396-2:2022, this document sets requirements for handling feedstock, conditioning materials and specimens, and selecting appropriate test methods to characterize PA materials for specification, quality control and material data sheets.
Key Topics and Requirements
- Specimen preparation methods
- Injection moulding in accordance with ISO 294-1 and consistent processing conditions to ensure comparable data.
- Laser sintering specimen preparation (requirements and procedures referenced, including Annex A).
- Material treatment and moisture control
- Material must reach room temperature before processing.
- Maximum moisture content limits before processing: ≤ 2 g/kg for PAs with viscosity number ≤ 200 ml/g; ≤ 1 g/kg for PAs with viscosity number > 200 ml/g.
- Specific PAs (e.g., PA46, PA6T/66 and certain polyamide blends) require moisture content < 1 g/kg.
- Moisture for filled/reinforced compounds expressed as percentage of total compound mass; moisture measured per ISO 15512.
- Conditioning states
- Defines conditioning states such as dry‑as‑moulded (DAM) and moist states and requirements for specimen conditioning prior to testing.
- Designatory and test properties
- Lists properties and test methods selected from ISO 10350‑1 (general test methods) plus other widely used methods relevant to PA moulding and extrusion materials.
- Includes designation of viscosity number and tensile modulus (as specified in ISO 16396‑1).
- Referenced test methods
- Incorporates/aligns with established standards for water absorption, tensile properties, melt flow, density, DSC, impact, ash content, and electrical properties.
Applications - Who Uses This Standard
- Material manufacturers and compounders: for producing comparable technical data and material specifications.
- Accredited test laboratories: to prepare specimens and report PA property data that are reproducible and accepted by industry.
- OEMs, part designers and R&D teams: to select suitable polyamides and validate performance for injection-moulded and extruded parts.
- Quality assurance and compliance professionals: for specification control, supplier verification and regulatory documentation.
- Additive manufacturing users: for PA specimen preparation by laser sintering and property evaluation.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out
through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical
committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International
organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of
electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are
described in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the
different types of ISO documents should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the
editorial rules of the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www.iso.org/directives).
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of
patent rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights. Details of
any patent rights identified during the development of the document will be in the Introduction and/or
on the ISO list of patent declarations received (see www.iso.org/patents).

expressions related to conformity assessment, as well as information about ISO's adherence to
the World Trade Organization (WTO) principles in the Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT), see

This document was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 61, Plastics, Subcommittee SC 9,
Thermoplastic materials., in collaboration with the European Committee for Standardization (CEN)
Technical Committee CEN/TC 249, Plastics, in accordance with the Agreement on technical cooperation
between ISO and CEN (Vienna Agreement).
This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition (ISO 16396-2:2017), which has been
technically revised.
The main changes are as follows:
— the normative references clause has been updated;
— a footnote has been added in Table 1.
A list of all parts in the ISO 16396 series can be found on the ISO website.
