Overview
EN 1837:1999/prA1 is a CEN draft amendment (prA1, January 2009) to the European standard EN 1837:1999, titled "Safety of machinery - Integral lighting of machines". Prepared by CEN/TC 169, this amendment updates normative references, definitions and lighting requirements for machine‑integrated lighting systems, and aligns the standard with current machinery safety directives (including 2006/42/EC). It is intended to support conformity assessment and safe design of lighting that is built into or supplied with machines.
Key Topics and Requirements
- Normative references updated: incorporates EN ISO 12100‑1/2 (machine safety principles), EN 12464‑1/2 (workplace lighting), EN 12665 and EN 1838 (emergency lighting).
- Terms and definitions: aligns terminology with EN 12464‑1 and EN 12665; adds definition of intended use of a machine (user information per EN ISO 12100‑1).
- General lighting performance:
- Task area illuminance: maintained illuminance of at least 500 lx with minimum uniformity 0.7.
- Immediate surrounding areas: maintained illuminance of at least 300 lx with uniformity ≥ 0.3.
- For specific tasks, reference EN 12464 series.
- Ergonomics:
- Adjustable luminaires should be stable yet easy to reposition (e.g., when switching between sitting and standing).
- Actuators must be suitable for intended use.
- Emergency lighting: required for large machines that may operate when normal lighting fails (see EN 1838).
- Luminaires: design should facilitate ease of service and cleaning; safety and protection classes referenced to EN 60598‑1 and EN 60529.
- Verification & maintenance:
- Test reports should document illuminances, uniformities, luminaire positions, glare/flicker checks and intended use conditions.
- Annual inspections and cleaning/maintenance per the machine maintenance schedule are mandated.
Applications and Users
This standard is practical for stakeholders involved in machine safety and lighting design:
- Machine designers and OEMs specifying integral lighting for production, CNC, packaging and large industrial machinery.
- Safety engineers ensuring compliance with the Machinery Directive (2006/42/EC) and CE marking.
- Lighting designers and consultants tasked with task‑area illumination and ergonomics on machines.
- Maintenance teams responsible for verification, cleaning and annual checks of machine lighting.
- Notified bodies and conformity assessors referencing presumption of conformity to essential requirements.
Related Standards
Relevant standards referenced or aligned in the amendment:
- EN ISO 12100‑1/2 - Safety of machinery (basic concepts and principles)
- EN 12464‑1 / EN 12464‑2 - Lighting of workplaces
- EN 12665 - Basic lighting terms and criteria
- EN 1838 - Emergency lighting
- EN 60598‑1 - Luminaires - General requirements
