Overview

EN 62911:2016 (CLC adoption of IEC 62911:2016) specifies routine electrical safety testing procedures for audio, video and information technology equipment during or after manufacture. It targets products powered from an a.c. or d.c. mains supply and intended to comply with IEC 60065, IEC 60950-1 or IEC 62368-1. The standard is focused on production-line Audio, Video Electrical Safety Test practices that detect manufacturing defects and unacceptable material or workmanship tolerances.

Key Topics

  • Scope and applicability: Routine tests apply to complete equipment, sub‑assemblies or components; testing location may be at any appropriate production stage as determined by the manufacturer and conformity assessment.
  • Resistance of protective bonding system:
    • Continuity must be checked between protective earth and accessible conductive parts (and earth contacts of outlets if provided).
    • Test current: 150% of protective overcurrent rating, but not less than 10 A and not more than 25 A (AC or DC), applied for 1–4 s. Source no‑load voltage shall not exceed 12 V.
    • Maximum measured resistance (calculated from voltage drop): 0.1 Ω. Power cord resistance may be included or subtracted per the procedure.
  • Electric strength (insulation) test:
    • Insulation testing is required between mains-connected (primary) circuits and accessible conductive parts, and between other circuits where applicable.
    • Test voltages and methods depend on whether the equipment is powered from AC or DC mains and on whether accessible parts are connected to protective earth; specific minimum voltages are defined in the standard’s tables. Manufacturers may choose higher voltages if not damaging insulation.
  • Records and conformance: Test results must be recorded prior to shipment and retained as part of the conformity process.

Applications

  • Production and final‑assembly testing on lines manufacturing TVs, AV equipment, computers, servers, peripherals and related IT/AV devices.
  • Incoming inspection or sub‑assembly testing for transformers, power supplies and connectors where complete‑equipment testing is impractical.
  • Quality assurance, factory acceptance procedures, and corrective action testing to avoid field failures and recalls.
  • Use by production/test engineers, QA managers, compliance officers, and third‑party conformity assessors implementing Audio, Video Electrical Safety Test regimes.

Related standards

  • IEC 60065 (audio/video apparatus safety)
  • IEC 60950-1 (information technology equipment - now largely superseded by IEC 62368-1)
  • IEC 62368-1 (AV, IT and communication equipment safety)
  • EN 50514:2014 (superseded by EN 62911:2016)

EN 62911:2016 provides a concise production-testing framework that integrates with product safety requirements of the referenced IEC standards, helping manufacturers implement reliable routine electrical safety testing and documentation.
