Overview

SIST EN 60335-2-26:2003/A1:2008 is a European standard developed by the CLC (European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization) that specifies safety requirements for household and similar electrical clocks. It is an amendment (A1:2008) to the original EN 60335-2-26:2003 standard, harmonizing safety provisions in line with IEC 60335-2-26:2002/A1:2008. This document outlines particular safety measures addressing the unique risks associated with electrical clocks used in domestic environments. The standard plays a critical role in ensuring the safety of users, including vulnerable groups such as children and people with limited physical, sensory, or mental capabilities.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Safety Focus
The standard applies specifically to electrical clocks intended for household and similar use. It addresses hazards and abnormal conditions that may arise during normal operation, including electromagnetic interference affecting appliance safety. Special attention is given to persons whose capabilities or experience may prevent safe use without supervision, emphasizing user safety for children as well.

  • Amendment Highlights
This amendment clarifies and supplements existing clauses related to user safety, mechanical strength, thermal safety, and electromagnetic compatibility in clocks. It also specifies transitional timelines for national adoption and withdrawal of conflicting national standards.

  • User Safety Measures
The document enforces safety precautions concerning:

    • Electrical insulation and protection to prevent shock hazards
    • Thermal safety ensuring surfaces do not reach dangerous temperatures, referencing ISO 13732-1 for hot surface contact assessment
    • Mechanical strength against breakage and injury from faulty parts
    • Child safety considerations, including preventing hazard during play
  • Integration with General Standards
SIST EN 60335-2-26:2003/A1:2008 complements the general safety provisions of EN 60335-1 (Household and similar electrical appliances - Safety - General requirements). When particular hazards are not covered in this Part 2 standard, EN 60335-1 applies to ensure comprehensive safety coverage.

Applications

SIST EN 60335-2-26:2003/A1:2008 is essential for manufacturers, testing labs, and regulatory bodies involved with:

  • Design and production of household electric clocks including wall clocks, alarm clocks, and timers
  • Safety testing and certification ensuring clocks meet European electrical safety directives
  • Market compliance and regulatory approval within EU member states and CENELEC countries
  • Risk assessment for user groups, especially children and persons needing supervised use

Manufacturers applying this standard can guarantee that electrical clocks incorporated into homes and similar settings are safe, reliable, and compliant with the latest European safety requirements.

Related Standards

  • EN 60335-1: General safety requirements for household and similar electrical appliances
  • IEC 60335-2-26:2002/A1:2008: International counterpart focusing on clocks’ safety
  • ISO 13732-1: Ergonomics of the thermal environment – Assessment of human response to hot surfaces, referenced for thermal safety evaluation
  • Other Part 2 standards under IEC 60335 series: Covering particular requirements for various household electrical appliances

Adherence to SIST EN 60335-2-26:2003/A1:2008 ensures harmonization with European and international standards, enabling consistent safety practices across household electrical appliances, particularly clocks.
