Overview
SIST ISO 263:1998 establishes a comprehensive standard for inch screw threads, focusing on the general plan and selection criteria for screws, bolts, and nuts within a diameter range of 0.06 to 6 inches. Developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), this standard provides tabulated data for inch-based threads featuring the basic triangular thread profile as specified in ISO 68. It offers a clear classification system, including a variety of series with different diameter/pitch combinations and a structured system for thread designations. This standard replaces the earlier ISO/R 263-1962 recommendation, ensuring consistency and precision in thread specifications for mechanical engineering and commercial fasteners.
Key Topics
Thread Series and Designation
The standard divides inch screw threads into several series, categorized by pitch behavior:- Coarse Pitch Series (UNC): Recommended for general-purpose fasteners and bolts, extending up to 4 inches diameter.
- Fine Pitch Series (UNF): Offers greater tensile strength and is suitable for applications requiring enhanced thread resistance.
- Extra Fine Series (UNEF): Intended for smaller diameters up to 1 11/16 inches, providing very fine pitch threads ideal for thin-walled parts and high-precision uses.
- Constant Pitch Series (UN): Includes threads with uniform pitch (such as 4 to 32 threads per inch), providing extended combinations where standard coarse or fine pitches do not fit requirements.
Diameter and Pitch Range
The standard covers diameters from 0.06 inch to 6 inches, accommodating a broad spectrum of engineering applications. It tabulates multiple combinations of diameter and pitch widely used in industrial and commercial fasteners.Thread Profile
All threads conform to the basic triangular profile of ISO 68, ensuring international uniformity and interchangeability.Applications and Selection Guidelines
Guidelines for choosing the appropriate thread series based on application needs, mechanical resistance, material types, and operating conditions are provided. For example, coarse threads suit materials with low tensile strength like cast iron or soft steel, whereas fine or extra-fine threads are preferred for rapid assembly/disassembly and for thin materials.Designation System
Clear examples of thread designations (e.g., 1/4-20 UNC, 1/4-28 UNF, 1/4-32 UNEF) are included to standardize communication and specification in design documents and supply chains.
Applications
SIST ISO 263:1998 serves as a critical reference for industries and engineers involved in:
- Mechanical Engineering: Creating reliable fastener connections with standardized threads for assemblies ranging from machinery parts to structural components.
- Manufacturing: Guiding production and quality control of screws, bolts, nuts, and threaded components with consistent thread profiles and sizes.
- Automotive and Aerospace: Ensuring precision and safety in thread usage where mechanical properties and durability are key.
- Maintenance and Repairs: Supporting interchangeability in fastener replacement and repairs with globally recognized thread designations.
- Commercial Fasteners Industry: Helping manufacturers and suppliers classify and market inch-based threaded fasteners internationally.
By adopting ISO 263, industries achieve greater compatibility, reliability, and efficiency in threaded fastener applications.
Related Standards
- ISO 68: Defines the basic profile for metric and inch triangular thread forms, serving as the foundational geometry for ISO 263 threads.
- ISO 898: Covers mechanical properties of fasteners, complementing thread standards by specifying material strength requirements.
- ANSI/ASME B1.1: U.S. standard for Unified Inch Screw Threads, often aligned or referenced alongside ISO 263 for compatibility.
- ISO 965: Specifies general tolerances for ISO metric screw threads, relevant for dimensional accuracy and fitting performance.
Understanding ISO 263 in conjunction with these standards ensures comprehensive knowledge of thread geometry, strength, tolerances, and material considerations.
Keywords: ISO 263, inch screw threads, thread diameter range, ISO 68 triangular profile, UNC, UNF, UNEF, thread designations, bolt thread standards, mechanical fasteners, screw thread pitch, ISO thread series, thread profile selection, industrial fasteners, bolt and nut standards, inch fastener threads.

AVANT-PROPOS
