This document is a guide describing the recommended practices in specifying industrial requirements in the form of recognised standards (national, European, international), in preference to company standards.
It emphasises the economic and industrial value of following and encouraging such practices.
It is based on what is frequently observed and considered by primes and manufacturers as constituting best practices to the benefit of all involved in the life cycle of a product, from the design stage until its withdrawal from service.....

Overview
EN 4617:2006 - "Aerospace series - Recommended practices for standardising company standards" (CEN) is a guidance standard that promotes using recognised public standards (national, European, international) in preference to proprietary company standards. It explains the rationale, industrial benefits and a practical, step‑wise approach for rationalising and harmonising company standards across the aerospace product life cycle - from design through withdrawal from service.
Key topics
- Purpose & scope: Guidance to specification writers, designers and managers to increase use of public standards and reduce company‑specific requirements.
- Industrial challenges: Describes the high volume and diversity of company standards, the estimated imbalance between company vs public standard usage, and the cost/complexity impact on primes and manufacturers.
- Favourable conditions: Importance of a formal standardisation policy and a maintained Standard Reference System (SRS) or standards handbook to guide procurement and design choices.
- Rationalisation approach: Methodology for analysing existing company standards, mapping them to applicable public standards, identifying gaps, and deciding when to: reference, replace, update, or create standards.
- From individual to group action: Encourages moving initiatives from single contributors to multi‑stakeholder working groups (primes, manufacturers, purchasers, quality).
- Best practices: Regular SRS reviews, state requirements as results rather than prescriptive means, reference public standards within company standards, avoid copying text from standards, and proactive engagement with standardisation bodies.
- Terminology & contacts: Includes definitions (public standard, company standard, SRS) and contact points (ASD‑STAN, national bodies such as BSI, DIN, UNI, etc.).
Practical applications & users
Who uses EN 4617:2006:
- Prime contractors - to reduce document maintenance, qualification costs and product diversity.
- Manufacturers / suppliers - to lower manufacturing and stock costs, increase market access and influence standards development.
- Designers, specification writers, purchasing, quality - to adopt harmonised requirements and simplify procurement and compliance.
- Program managers & integrators - during mergers, new program launches or obsolescence management.
Practical benefits:
- Lower production costs, shorter lead times, reduced non‑conformity risk, wider supplier competition and simplified document control.
Related standards & bodies
- Recommends engaging with ASD‑STAN, CEN, ISO and national standards bodies (BSI, DIN, UNI, etc.) for drafting, monitoring and influencing public standards.
- EN 4617 is part of the aerospace standardisation ecosystem and complements existing industry and regulatory standards.
Keywords: EN 4617:2006, aerospace standardization, company standards, public standards, standard reference system, harmonisation, ASD‑STAN, CEN.

all involved in the life cycle of a product, from the design stage until its withdrawal from service. The purpose of this guide is to: encourage specification writers and designers to make greater use of existing recognised standards and at the same time to reduce the use of company standards; increase the awareness among specification writers, designers, manufacturers and users of company standards of the value and importance of being part of a joint multilateral approach to formalising, through standards, requirements for which the audience is generally known; provide methodological support for the users of company standards when undertaking the rationalisation of various requirements. The achievement of this objective will be measured by: the reduction in the total volume of standards documentation, with an increase in the use of public standards as opposed to company standards, lower production costs arising from a reduction in product diversity.
