Overview
SIST EN 581-1:2017 is a European Standard developed by CEN that defines general safety requirements for outdoor furniture seating and tables designed for camping, domestic, and contract use by adults. It addresses critical safety aspects to ensure products meet stringent standards to protect users from physical injury.
This standard specifically excludes removable upholstery, coverings, seating for spectator facilities, and children’s furniture. In addition, it focuses on safety elements such as design features, edges, corners, and mechanical hazards to minimize risks during normal use.
Key Topics
Scope and Applicability
SIST EN 581-1:2017 provides general safety guidelines for outdoor seating and tables used by adults in camping, residential, and professional settings. It focuses on injury prevention related to physical aspects of furniture construction.Safety Requirements
- Edges and Corners: All edges and corners accessible during normal use must be rounded, chamfered, or otherwise protected to avoid cuts or abrasions.
- Tubular Components: Tubular parts must not have accessible holes sized between 7 mm and 12 mm with a depth of 10 mm or more to prevent finger entrapment and floor damage.
- Shear and Squeeze Points: The standard limits potential finger injuries caused by parts moving relative to each other. Shear and squeeze points are controlled through specific dimensional criteria and design constraints, especially during erecting, folding, or adjusting furniture. Powered mechanisms must not generate accessible shear or squeeze points.
- User-Controlled Movements: Injuries from shear and squeeze points created only during manual manipulation are acceptable provided users can promptly stop motion when feeling pain.
Test Probes and Evaluation
The document specifies cylindrical test probes of 7 mm, 12 mm, and 18 mm diameters (with hemispherical ends) used to assess gaps and entrapping points. These probes help verify compliance with safety requirements concerning accessibility and risk of injury.Test Reporting
A comprehensive test report must include references to the standard, item details, observed defects, results per relevant clauses, compliance confirmation, tester’s identification, and testing dates.Informative Annexes
- Annex A provides schematic illustrations of shear and squeeze point requirements.
- Annex B offers a rationale explaining the risk of finger injuries related to edges, tubular holes, and moving parts.
Applications
SIST EN 581-1:2017 is essential for manufacturers, designers, and suppliers of outdoor furniture used in camping, residential, and public contract settings. It ensures products:
- Meet mandatory safety standards preventing user injury from sharp edges, finger entrapment, and mechanical hazards.
- Comply with European regulatory frameworks, facilitating market access throughout CEN member countries.
- Provide consumers with confidence in the safety and reliability of outdoor seating and tables.
- Complement mechanical safety standards EN 581-2 (seating) and EN 581-3 (tables) by addressing general safety and design risks.
This standard is particularly relevant for products such as:
- Portable camping chairs and foldable tables
- Outdoor dining and lounge seating for homes and gardens
- Contract-use outdoor seating and tables in hospitality and public spaces
Related Standards
- EN 581-2:2015 - Covers mechanical safety requirements and testing methods for outdoor seating.
- EN 581-3:2007 - Specifies mechanical safety requirements and test methods for outdoor tables.
These complementary parts of the EN 581 series collectively ensure comprehensive safety performance of outdoor furniture in mechanical integrity and user protection.
By adhering to SIST EN 581-1:2017, outdoor furniture manufacturers enhance product safety, reduce liability risks, and reinforce consumer trust by delivering secure, ergonomic, and compliant seating and table solutions suitable for outdoor environments.
