Overview
SIST EN 581-3:2026 specifies the mechanical safety and test methods for outdoor tables, focusing on their strength, reliability, and stability. It applies to tables used in camping, domestic, and contract environments by adults, including outdoor tables that incorporate glass. This standard sets out requirements to prevent physical injury during normal use, addresses structural integrity, and provides guidance for safe design and testing. It does not apply to street furniture, office tables, educational worktops, or include requirements for electrical safety or resistance to ageing.
Key Topics
Mechanical Safety Requirements
- General safety: Tables must be designed to prevent injury and avoid damage during intended use.
- Edges and corners: Accessible edges should be rounded, chamfered, and free from burs and sharp points.
- Shear and compression points: Criteria are set to minimize risks during both setup and everyday use.
Structural Safety
- Stability: Testing under vertical loads and for configuration changes (e.g., extension pieces or parasol support).
- Strength and durability: Defined parameters based on intended use, such as camping, domestic, or contract, with different test forces and load cycles.
- Glass safety: Guidelines for glass components to meet safety glass requirements under EN 12150-1 and EN 12600.
Test Methods
- Standardized test sequences: Include load, durability, and impact tests (as per EN 1730).
- Specific probes and test apparatus: For finger entrapment, sharp edges, and shear/compression hazards.
- Documented procedures for additional performance such as folding durability and castor-wheeled tables.
User Information
- Clear instructions for assembly, maintenance, safe use, and any special features (such as parasol holes).
- Labelling and documentation must be provided in the user's language with required warnings and technical information.
Applications
SIST EN 581-3:2026 is crucial for manufacturers, designers, importers, and retailers of outdoor tables intended for:
- Camping: Lightweight, portable tables designed to fold or be easily transported.
- Domestic Use: Garden or patio tables for private residences, focused on safety in home environments.
- Contract Use: Robust furniture for public areas in commercial or hospitality settings (excluding permanently fixed street furniture).
By following this standard, stakeholders ensure products are safe for adults, compliant with EU and international expectations, and suitable for repeated use under a variety of environmental conditions. Adhering to this standard supports consumer safety, product reliability, and legal compliance, while enhancing market trust in outdoor furniture.
Related Standards
Compliance with SIST EN 581-3:2026 often requires reference to related standards, including:
- EN 581-1: General safety requirements for outdoor furniture.
- EN 1730: Test methods for stability, strength, and durability of tables.
- EN 12150-1: Thermally toughened safety glass for building applications.
- EN 12600: Impact test methods for flat glass used in furniture.
- EN 581-2: Mechanical safety for outdoor seating.
- prEN 17684 (under development): Electrical safety for outdoor furniture.
Adopting SIST EN 581-3:2026 ensures your outdoor tables meet essential safety and durability benchmarks, reducing liability and promoting consumer confidence.
