LPG equipment and accessories - Welded steel pressure vessels for LPG road tankers - Design and manufacture

This European Standard specifies minimum requirements for materials, design, construction and workmanship procedures, and tests for welded LPG road tanker pressure vessels and their welded attachments manufactured from carbon, carbon/manganese and micro alloy steels.
There is no upper size limit as this is determined by the gross vehicle weight limitation.
This European Standard does not cover pressure vessels for pressure vessel containers.
NOTE 1 In the context of this standard the term "road tanker" is understood to mean "fixed tanks" and "demountable tanks" as defined in ADR.
NOTE 2 The equipment for the pressure vessels and the inspection and testing after assembly is covered by EN 12252 and EN 14334, respectively.
NOTE 3 The design type of the road tanker is subject to approval by the competent authority, as required by ADR.

Overview

EN 12493:2013+A1:2014/prA2 - published by CEN - specifies minimum requirements for the design and manufacture of welded steel pressure vessels for LPG road tankers. It covers vessels and welded attachments made from carbon, carbon/manganese and micro‑alloy steels used for LPG transport by road (fixed and demountable tanks as defined by ADR). The standard sets requirements for materials, construction, workmanship and testing; it does not apply to pressure vessel containers. Vehicle size is governed by gross vehicle weight limits rather than the standard.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope and applicability
    • Intended specifically for LPG; for other liquefied gases see EN 14025.
    • Design type subject to competent authority approval under ADR.
  • Materials and construction
    • Acceptable steels: carbon, carbon/manganese and micro‑alloy steels.
    • Minimum shell and end thickness calculations are aligned with ADR requirements.
  • Welding and personnel qualification
    • Welders and welding operators must be qualified (reference moved from EN 287‑1 to EN ISO 9606‑1 and EN ISO 14732).
    • Welding procedures to conform to EN ISO 15614‑1 where weld metal is deposited during repairs.
  • Non‑destructive testing (NDT)
    • Radiographic testing requirements updated to EN ISO 5579 and EN ISO 17636‑1/2 (class B).
    • Radiographic image quality to conform to EN ISO 19232‑1/2.
  • Design calculations and fittings
    • Cylindrical shell, dished ends and nozzle reinforcement rules; minimum thickness not less than ADR-calculated values.
    • Doubler/compensation plates must have vent holes or test sockets.
    • Surge plate spacing limited (distance between surge plates ≤ 4 m).
  • Testing and records
    • Hydraulic test safety precautions and manufacturer record‑keeping (welders list, approvals per EN ISO 9606‑1).
  • Environmental and normative updates
    • Standard to be read with CEN/TS 16765 for environmental considerations; bibliography includes EN 14025 and related standards.

Applications and users

This standard is essential for:

  • Manufacturers and fabricators of LPG road tankers
  • Design engineers responsible for pressure vessel design and CAD calculations
  • Quality and welding supervisors ensuring compliance with welding and NDT procedures
  • Certification bodies and competent authorities performing ADR approvals
  • Fleet operators, maintenance and repair workshops involved in vessel repairs and periodic testing

Related standards (selected)

  • EN 12252, EN 14334 - equipment and inspection/testing after assembly
