Overview

SIST EN 60670-21:2007/A11:2024 is a European standard established by CLC that specifies particular requirements for boxes and enclosures with provision for suspension means. These boxes and enclosures are designed for electrical accessories used in household and similar fixed electrical installations. The amendment A11, approved in July 2023, updates the 2007 version by modifying key clauses related to protection against electric shock, mechanical strength, and annexes to ensure greater safety and compliance with modern electrical safety regulations.

This standard forms part of the EN 60670 series and should be used in conjunction with EN IEC 60670-1:2021 and its amendment EN IEC 60670-1:2021/A11:2021. It supports compliance with the European Low Voltage Directive 2014/35/EU, facilitating harmonized technical requirements for electrical equipment safety across Europe.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Application
EN 60670-21 covers the specific design and construction requirements of electrical accessory boxes and enclosures that feature suspension means. It addresses safety, durability, and mechanical properties necessary for fixed household electrical installations and similar environments.

  • Protection Against Electric Shock
The amendment removes some previous common modifications in Clause 10, reflecting updated safety considerations to prevent electric shock risks effectively.

  • Mechanical Strength Requirements
Clause 15 has been revised, allowing for greater torque values during installation as per instruction sheets and adjusting test conditions to align with national requirements for load and temperature resistance. This guarantees enhanced durability and resilience under mechanical stress.

  • Annexes and National Conditions
The document includes normative annexes detailing references to international publications and special national conditions for countries such as Denmark, Finland, Sweden, the UK, and the Netherlands. These specify variations in marking safety factors, test load values, and temperature requirements to address local practices and regulatory environments.

  • Compliance with EU Safety Legislation
Annex ZZ relates the standard explicitly to the safety objectives of the EU Low Voltage Directive (2014/35/EU), ensuring that conformity with this standard provides presumption of compliance with essential electrical safety requirements, including:

    • Protection against electrical shock
    • Mechanical strength and durability
    • Resistance to heat, fire, and ingress of foreign objects
    • Marking and construction requirements for safe assembly and use

Applications

SIST EN 60670-21:2007/A11:2024 applies broadly to manufacturers, installers, and regulators involved in:

  • Production of electrical accessory boxes and enclosures that incorporate suspension means, such as hooks or mounting brackets, for use in fixed household electrical installations.
  • Design and testing for electrical products that require safe mechanical support and electrical protection in domestic or similar fixed wiring settings.
  • Ensuring compliance with European safety standards for electrical equipment to facilitate market access and regulatory approval within the EU and EFTA countries.
  • National electrical regulatory bodies referencing the standard for harmonized electrical installation practices and safety certification.
  • Technical guidance for electrical engineers specifying enclosures that must endure mechanical loads and environmental factors without compromising safety.

Related Standards

  • EN IEC 60670-1:2021 & EN IEC 60670-1:2021/A11:2021 – General requirements for boxes and enclosures for electrical accessories.
  • EN 60670 series – Comprehensive standards covering electrical equipment enclosure requirements within household and similar fixed installations.
  • EU Low Voltage Directive 2014/35/EU – Legislative directive defining safety objectives for electrical equipment within certain voltage limits.
  • National Standards – Specific country adaptations integrating local conditions, e.g., mechanical load safety factors and thermal resistance, influencing testing and marking requirements.
