Overview

SIST EN ISO 1247-2:2023 specifies the requirements and test methods for vacuum metallized aluminium pigments (VMP) used in the paints and printing ink industries. Developed by the Slovenian Institute for Standardization (SIST) and harmonized with international and European organizations, this standard aligns with ISO 1247-2:2021. The document is essential for ensuring consistency, quality, and reliability of aluminium pigments manufactured or used across various industrial sectors, particularly in finishes requiring metallic effects.

Key Topics

  • Vacuum Metallized Aluminium Pigments (VMP):
VMPs are pigments produced by a vacuum metallizing process (also known as physical vapour deposition or PVD) and subsequent sizing of aluminized foils. Pigments may exhibit non-leafing or leafing characteristics, depending on processing.

  • Performance Requirements:
    The standard outlines criteria including:

    • Minimum non-volatile matter
    • Maximum residue on a 45-micron sieve
    • Water content limits
    • Particle size distribution parameters (to be agreed between parties)
    • Acceptable metallic impurities
  • Test Methods:
Detailed procedures are provided to assess:

    • Non-volatile content (following ISO 1247-1)
    • Sieve residue (specific method outlined)
    • Water content
    • Appearance comparison with agreed reference
    • Particle size (using methods such as ISO 13320)
  • Sampling and Reporting:
Guidance on representative sampling (according to ISO 15528) and elements required in the test report, including product identification, compliance results, deviations from standard methods, and test dates.

Applications

Aluminium pigments covered by SIST EN ISO 1247-2:2023 are predominantly used in:

  • Paints and Coatings:
Deliver metallic luster and high reflectivity for decorative and protective finishes in automotive, architectural, industrial, and consumer goods sectors.

  • Printing Inks:
Enable premium effects for packaging, labels, and security applications due to their superior brightness and ability to create a mirror-like finish.

  • Plastics, Cosmetics, and Specialty Products:
Applicable where visual appearance and reflectance are critical, though the primary focus remains on paints and inks.

Complying with this standard ensures:

  • Reliable product performance
  • Compatibility across different industries
  • Fulfillment of regulatory and client specifications

Related Standards

Key documents referenced or related to SIST EN ISO 1247-2:2023 include:

  • ISO 1247-1: General requirements for aluminium pigments for paints.
  • ISO 13320: Methods for particle size analysis by laser diffraction.
  • ISO 15528: Procedures for sampling paints, varnishes, and raw materials.
  • ISO 18451-1 & ISO 18451-2: Terminology and classification of pigments, dyestuffs, and extenders.
  • ISO 787 (all parts): General methods of test for pigments.
  • Additional laboratory glassware and testing procedures (e.g., ISO 385, ISO 648, ISO 3696) may be applicable for precise measurements and quality assurance.

Conclusion

SIST EN ISO 1247-2:2023 is a vital standard for manufacturers, suppliers, and users of vacuum metallized aluminium pigments in the paints and printing ink industries. Adoption of its requirements and methods enhances product uniformity, safety, and market confidence while supporting international trade and regulatory compliance. For detailed technical information and conformity assessment, users should consult the full text of the standard and the referenced documents.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out
through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical
committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International
organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
