General Information
Overview
EN 13100-4:2012 - Non destructive testing of welded joints of thermoplastics semifinished products - Part 4: High voltage testing (CEN) specifies equipment, methods and acceptance-oriented procedures for locating through‑thickness defects in butt and overlap welded joints of thermoplastic sheets. The standard applies to new, unused constructions and focuses on high‑voltage (holiday) testing using spark testers and holiday detectors while emphasizing safety and repeatable test reporting.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and principle: A high voltage is applied to the weld surface while the opposite side is in contact with a conductive substrate (or a wire in overlap joints). Defects are indicated by spark discharge with optical and/or acoustic signals.
- Equipment types:
- High‑frequency spark tester - mains powered, high voltage (up to ~100 kV), visual spark indication; no substrate connection required if substrate is large metal.
- DC holiday detector - stabilised DC output (to ~50 kV), meter readout, audio/visual alarms; substrate connection required.
- Pulsed holiday detector - pulsed DC up to ~50 kV, higher power, works with some surface moisture; requires special meter for crest verification.
- Voltage determination: The standard provides methods to calculate the initial test voltage (VI) from sheet geometry and to calculate breakdown voltage VB = Ds × dt (Ds = dielectric strength; dt = distance through material). If VI exceeds VB, EN 13100‑4 prescribes controlled trial holes and a procedure using the measured sparking voltage (Vo) to derive the actual test voltage (VA).
- Test electrodes and technique:
- Electrode must make continuous contact; use small brush electrodes for recesses or overlap joints; place an uninsulated wire near the inner edge for overlap tests to lower required voltage.
- Recommended traverse speeds: up to 40 cm/s for DC/pulsed detectors, up to 20 cm/s for spark testers (manufacturers’ limits apply).
- Safety and environment: Explicit attention to electric shock risks, explosion hazards in flammable atmospheres, and electromagnetic disturbances.
- Reporting: Test report must reference EN 13100‑4 and include object ID, material, weld geometry, thickness, welding process, tester type, electrode, test voltage/spark length, defects and operator/date.
Applications and users
- Practical for NDT technicians, fabricators and quality managers who inspect welded thermoplastic sheets (e.g., geomembranes, liners, tanks, ducts) in manufacturing and field acceptance testing.
- Useful to inspection bodies, manufacturers and contractors who require a repeatable, safety‑aware method to locate through‑thickness defects prior to commissioning.

4 Principle of the test A high voltage is applied to one side of the joint to be tested using a suitable electrode, the other side of the material needs to be in contact with a conductive substrate which in some cases will need a connection back to the test equipment. The test shall be carried out with a voltage high enough to jump the gap between the test electrode and a conductor. A defect is indicated by a spark discharge and, depending on the equipment used, a simultaneous optical and / or acoustic signal.
The health and safety aspects (e.g. electric shocks, risks of explosions in flammable atmosphere) together with the environmental impacts (e.g. electromagnetic disturbances) shall be thoroughly considered before operating the equipment.
NOTE Moisture in concrete can make it sufficiently conductive to allow high voltage testing to be used. SIST EN 13100-4:2014
