Overview

EN 13507:2018 - Thermal spraying: Pre-treatment of surfaces of metallic parts and components for thermal spraying (CEN) defines the principles and processing requirements for preparing metallic substrates prior to thermal spray application. It covers production of new parts and repair of worn parts, and sets out methods to achieve a technically clean, suitably roughened surface to ensure adequate coating adhesion. This standard excludes atmospheric corrosion protection by zinc/aluminium coatings (see EN ISO 2063-1:2017 / EN ISO 2063-2:2017).

Key topics and requirements

  • Principles: Surface preparation critically affects sprayed-coating adhesion; substrates must be accessible, dry and free of contaminants (oil, grease, oxides, welding slag).
  • Degreasing: Remove oil and grease (heating, dipping, spraying, ultrasonic, aqueous or solvent cleaners). Avoid chlorinated/fluorinated hydrocarbons where possible; rinse and dry after cleaning.
  • Grit blasting: Primary method for roughening and cleaning. Target visual cleanliness commonly to Sa 3 (EN ISO 8501-1), but final cleanliness/roughness must be agreed between parties. Blasting parameters (media, pressure, distance, angle, time, machine type) must be optimized and controlled.
  • Abrasive selection: Guidance for fused alumina, silicon carbide (SiC), chilled iron grit and particle-size selection (see EN ISO 11124 and EN ISO 11126 series). Use clean, dry, sharp-edged media; remove degraded or rounded particles.
  • Post-cleaning and inspection: Remove abrasive residues and dust (vacuum or dry oil-free compressed air) and verify profile/cleanliness using reference standards (EN ISO 8503 series).
  • Threading/grooving: For internal coatings or thick repairs, threads/grooves may be machined (no liquid lubricants) to reduce shrinkage stresses; profile and depth linked to final coating thickness.
  • Alternative cleaning: Reversed transferred arc (in vacuum plasma) can remove oxides and preheat parts without re-oxidation.
  • Bond coatings: Apply bond coats (e.g., aluminium-containing, nickel-based, molybdenum) when grit blasting alone is insufficient to achieve adhesion.
  • Preheating: Prevent condensation (>50 °C) and reduce shrinkage stresses; powder flame spraying commonly preheated to 70–80 °C. Avoid oxidation during preheat.
  • Health, safety & environment: Follow national HSE regulations for hazardous materials, abrasives and processes.

Applications and users

Practical uses:

  • Surface preparation for thermal spray coatings in manufacturing and repair (wear protection, refurbishment of shafts, bores, bushings, components requiring rebuild). Who uses it:
  • Coating specifiers, thermal spray operators, surface engineers, maintenance and repair workshops, quality/inspection personnel, and procurement teams procuring sprayed coatings.
