Overview
SIST EN 50428:2006/A1:2007 is a collateral European standard developed by CLC (European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization) focusing on switches and related accessories for use in home and building electronic systems (HBES). It specifically addresses switches used in household and similar fixed electrical installations within electronic systems for homes and buildings.
This amendment A1 updates the original EN 50428:2005 standard by refining technical requirements, test methods, and classifications to improve safety, reliability, and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) of HBES switches. It aligns with EC Directive 2004/108/EC on electromagnetic compatibility.
Key Topics
Scope and Definitions
The standard excludes functional safety aspects of HBES switches but defines HBES as multi-application systems with decentralized functions linked through common communication processes. HBES switches serve functions like switching, open and closed loop controlling, monitoring, and supervising in homes and building environments.Classification
HBES switches are classified according to their intended installation environment:- For use in SELV (Separated Extra-Low Voltage)/PELV (Protected Extra-Low Voltage) environments only
- For use in SELV/PELV and/or mains environments
Construction and Materials
The standard sets constructional requirements: for example, lead ends of HBES switches may be prepared but must not be pre-soldered. It also specifies insulation resistance, dielectric strength, minimum clearances, and creepage distances to ensure electrical safety and prevent electric shocks.Insulation and Protection
Detailed tables specify test voltages, minimum insulation resistance, and creepage distances for basic, double, or reinforced insulation between circuits. Protective separation for SELV/PELV circuits must comply with relevant tests as per EN 61558-2-6.Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC)
The amendment modifies EMC requirements, specifying radiation immunity tests per EN 61000-4-3 with defined field strengths and frequency ranges. It also requires emission tests compliant with EN 50065-1 for power line signaling and sets conducted radio frequency emission tests for TP media interfaces.Testing and Verification
Compliance with construction, insulation, EMC, and other technical requirements is verified through visual inspections and standardized testing procedures defined within the standard and its annexes, including test setups for conducted emission and surge immunity.
Applications
Smart Home Systems
SIST EN 50428:2006/A1:2007 governs switches integral to smart home controls, enabling reliable and safe integration of lighting, heating, security, and environmental monitoring components.Building Automation
Switches and accessories designed under this standard are suitable for automated building management systems, supporting energy efficiency and operational control.Electrical Installations in Residential Buildings
The standard ensures that switches used in fixed electrical installations conform to strict safety and EMC guidelines, promoting secure household environments.Integration with Communication Systems
HBES switches compliant with EN 50428 support multi-application electronic systems communicating over common media such as power lines or twisted pair cables.
