This document specifies the performance requirements for metal halide lamps for general lighting purposes. For some of the requirements given in this document, reference is made to "the relevant lamp data sheet". For some lamps, these data sheets are contained in this document. For other lamps, falling under the scope of this document, the relevant data are supplied by the lamp manufacturer or responsible vendor. The requirements of this document relate only to type testing. The requirements and tolerances specified in this document correspond to testing of a type test sample submitted by the manufacturer for that purpose. In principle this type test sample consists of units having characteristics typical of the manufacturer’s production and being as close to the production centre point values as possible. It can be expected that with the tolerances given in this document, the product manufactured in accordance with the type test sample will comply with this document for the majority of production. Due to the production spread however, it is inevitable that there will sometimes be products outside the specified tolerances. For guidance on sampling plans and procedures for inspection by attributes, see ISO 2859-10.

This International Standard specifies sample preparation methods for determining mercury levels in new tubular fluorescent lamps (including single capped, double capped, self-ballasted and CCFL for backlighting) containing 0,1 mg mercury or more. The intended resolution of the methods described in this standard is of the order of 5 %. Mercury level measurement of spent lamps is excluded, as during lamp operation, mercury gradually diffuses into the glass wall and reacts with the glass materials. The test method of this standard does not recover mercury that is diffused into or reacted with or otherwise incorporated irreversibly with the glass wall of discharge tubes. This standard does not contain information on measurement. Measurement is specified in IEC 62321.

This first edition cancels and replaces IEC PAS 62717 published in 2011. This edition constitutes a technical revision. IEC 62035:2014 specifies the safety requirements for discharge lamps (excluding fluorescent lamps) for general lighting purposes. This International Standard is applicable to low-pressure sodium vapour lamps and to high-intensity discharge (HID) lamps, i.e. high-pressure mercury vapour lamps (including blended lamps), high-pressure sodium vapour lamps and metal halide lamps. It applies to single- and double-capped lamps, having caps as listed in Annex A. This standard only concerns safety criteria and does not take into account performance. The performance standards IEC 60188, IEC 60192, IEC 60662, IEC 61167 and IEC 61549 should be referred to for such characteristics. It may be expected that lamps which comply with this standard will operate safely at supply voltages between 90 % and 110 % of rated supply voltage and when operated with a ballast complying with IEC 61347-2-9 and IEC 60923, with a starting device complying with IEC 61347-2-1 and IEC 60927, and in a luminaire complying with IEC 60598-1. This first edition of IEC 62612 cancels and replaces IEC/PAS 62612. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to IEC/PAS 62612. a) The standard explicitly states that real life time tests are not part of the test regime. This second edition of IEC 60432-3 cancels and replaces the first edition published in 2002, Amendment 1 (2005) and Amendment 2 (2008). The main changes with respect to the previous edition are as follows: - adapting the cold fill pressure requirements and tests for self-shielded lamps to the state of the technology, - introduction of requirements to fully cover photobiological safety according to IEC 62471.
