Overview

EN 14067-5:2006/FprA1 - "Railway applications - Aerodynamics - Part 5: Requirements and test procedures for aerodynamics in tunnels" is a CEN European Standard (amendment FprA1) that addresses aerodynamic loading caused by trains running in tunnels. The amendment updates the standard’s relationship to EU Directive 2008/57/EC (rail system interoperability) via Annex ZA and clarifies conformity assessment links with Technical Specifications for Interoperability (TSIs). This document defines requirements and test procedures for evaluating tunnel-induced aerodynamic effects such as pressure waves and transient loads.

Key Topics

  • Scope and objective: Evaluation of aerodynamic loads generated by trains in tunnels and requirements for their measurement and assessment.
  • Test procedures: Prescribed methodologies for quantifying pressure changes and aerodynamic effects in tunnel environments (measurement, instrumentation and test protocols are addressed in the standard).
  • Performance criteria: Limits and health/safety criteria for pressure variations in tunnels (including relevance to passenger comfort and medical/health criteria).
  • Conformity and assessment: Procedures for assessment of conformity and suitability for use, including how results relate to interoperability requirements.
  • Regulatory alignment: Amendment FprA1 maps standard clauses to the Essential Requirements of EU Directive 2008/57/EC and to relevant TSIs (HS TSI RST/INF, CR LOC/PASS RST TSI, CR TSI INF).
  • Aerodynamic loading aspects: Consideration of steady and transient loads, maximum pressure variations, and technical compatibility between rolling stock and infrastructure.

Applications and Who Uses It

This standard is practical for professionals involved in the design, testing and certification of railway vehicles and tunnel infrastructure:

  • Rolling stock designers and manufacturers assessing vehicle nose shapes, pressure mitigation features and structural load resistance.
  • Tunnel and infrastructure engineers evaluating tunnel cross-section, ventilation, and safety measures against pressure waves.
  • Testing laboratories and measurement specialists implementing standardized tunnel aerodynamic test procedures and instrumentation.
  • Railway operators and infrastructure managers assessing compatibility of vehicles with existing tunnels and planning upgrades.
  • Certification bodies and conformity assessors verifying compliance with TSIs and EU interoperability requirements.

Related Standards

  • EN 14067 series (other parts on railway aerodynamics) - for vehicle and train aerodynamic characteristics.
  • TSIs and draft TSIs referenced in Annex ZA: HS TSI RST, HS TSI INF, CR LOC and PASS RST TSI, CR TSI INF.
  • EU Directive 2008/57/EC - interoperability requirements that this amendment aligns with.
