Reciprocating internal combustion engines - Handle starting equipment - Part 2: Method of testing the angle of disengagement (ISO 11102-2:1997)

This part of IS0 11102 describes the method for testing the angle of disengagement of starting handle equipment i.e. testing of the essential safety requirements according to IS0 111024 for reciprocating internal combustion engines for land, rail and marine use, excluding engines used to propel road vehicles and aircraft. It may be applied to engines used to propel road construction, earth moving machines and for other applications where no suitable international standards exist.

Overview

EN ISO 11102-2:2009 (ISO 11102-2:1997) defines the method for testing the angle of disengagement of handle starting equipment used on reciprocating internal combustion engines. This part of ISO 11102 supports the safety testing of manual crank/handle starters for engines used in land, rail and marine applications (excluding engines that propel road vehicles and aircraft). It is intended to be used with Part 1 (safety requirements and tests) and to provide a repeatable laboratory test procedure for measuring disengagement travel and angle.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope: Applies to handle starting equipment on reciprocating internal combustion engines for non-road applications (land, rail, marine); can be applied to construction and earth-moving machines where no suitable standards exist.
  • Test apparatus: Engine mounted on test equipment as indicated in the standard (figures for clockwise and anticlockwise engines). A stop is set so the starting-handle grip lies horizontally.
  • Test procedure:
    • Hang a 5 kg mass at the centre of the handle grip and turn the engine flywheel smoothly in the reverse direction using the crankhandle.
    • Measure the linear travel moved before disengagement using a scale and a mark on the handle shank.
    • Repeat with a 50 kg test mass.
    • The angle of disengagement may be calculated from travel or measured directly using an angular scale.
  • Repetition and reporting:
    • Perform 10 tests for each test mass.
    • Record the largest angle and travel observed on the test report (in accordance with ISO 11102-1).
  • Tolerances:
    • Angle measured to the nearest .
    • Linear travel measured to ±2 mm.

Practical applications and users

  • Who uses it:
    • Engine manufacturers and component suppliers designing or validating handle starting gear.
    • Test laboratories and quality/inspection teams performing compliance and safety tests.
    • Certification bodies assessing conformity with machinery safety directives.
    • Maintenance engineers and fleet owners managing legacy or off-road equipment.
  • Why it matters:
    • Provides a standardized, repeatable method to quantify disengagement behavior of manual starters.
    • Supports safety verification and documentation required for conformity with relevant EU machinery directives (see informative Annex ZA/ZB relating to 98/37/EC and 2006/42/EC).
    • Helps manufacturers demonstrate compliance with ISO 11102-1 (safety requirements and tests) and provides objective test data for design or safety reviews.
