Overview
prEN 602:2025 - Aluminium and aluminium alloys (wrought products) - Chemical composition of semi‑finished products used for food contact is a CEN draft standard that updates and will supersede EN 602:2004. It specifies maximum allowable contents of alloying elements and impurities in wrought aluminium and wrought aluminium alloys intended for fabrication of materials and articles that come into contact with foodstuffs (including semi‑finished products). The document also sets out how manufacturers should demonstrate conformity.
Key SEO keywords: aluminium food contact, wrought aluminium, aluminium alloys, chemical composition, EN 602:2025, CEN standard, food contact materials.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Limits apply to semi‑finished wrought products (sheets, foils, profiles, tubes, bars, etc.) and the finished articles made from them that contact food.
- Composition limits for aluminium: Examples include iron + silicon ≤ 1.0% and limits on individual elements such as chromium, magnesium, manganese, zinc and titanium (typically ≤ 0.10% each). Lead, cadmium, mercury and hexavalent chromium are restricted to a combined maximum of 0.0100% (100 ppm). Copper is normally ≤ 0.10% but may be permitted up to 0.20% under controlled conditions (see standard text).
- Composition limits for alloys (Table 2): Maximum element contents are specified for commonly used alloying elements (examples in the draft include silicon up to 13.5%, magnesium up to 11.0%, iron up to 2.0%, copper up to 0.6%, manganese up to 4.0%). Bismuth has been added as a limited element; nickel limitations were removed compared with the 2004 version.
- Safety rationale: Limits are based on toxicological considerations and to limit migration of elements into food, including compliance with packaging limits on heavy metals (Directive 94/62/EC as amended).
- Conformity and quality requirements:
- Check chemical composition against EN 573-3.
- Manufacturer quality assurance procedures, raw material qualification, labelling and traceability.
- Issue an inspection certificate (type 3.1 per EN 10204) for deliveries.
Applications and users
- Applications: Food packaging materials, kitchenware, cookware components, food-processing equipment parts and other articles intended for contact with food.
- Primary users:
- Aluminium producers and alloy formulators
- Semi‑finished product manufacturers (sheet, foil, extrusions, tube, bar)
- Food packaging manufacturers and converters
- Compliance officers, material engineers, and quality managers responsible for food contact safety
- The standard assists manufacturers and specifiers in selecting alloys appropriate for contact conditions (e.g., pH, temperature, contact time) and for pressure‑resisting parts (note: alloys with >5% Mg are restricted for certain pressure cooking uses).
Related standards and legislation
- EN 573-3 (chemical composition of wrought products)
