Introduction
This document is a type C standard as stated in EN ISO 12100.
!deleted text"
During the preparation of this standard, it was assumed that a negotiation would take place between the
purchaser and the manufacturer concerning the intended purpose of the rope.
Although tables of breaking forces and masses are provided for a number of the more common classes,
diameters and rope grades, this Part of this standard is not limited to those given, providing all of the
other requirements are met.
When provisions of this type C standard are different from those which are stated in type A or B
standards, the provisions of this type C standard take precedence over the provisions of the other
standards for wire ropes that have been designed and produced according to the provisions of this type
C standard.

The standard EN 12385-5:2021+A1:2025 is an essential document that delineates the materials, manufacturing processes, and testing protocols pertinent to stranded ropes, particularly for elevator applications. Its scope is explicitly tailored to safety, focusing on stranded ropes used for suspension, compensating, and governor duties within traction drive and hydraulic lifts, as well as other similar applications. One of the strengths of this standard is its comprehensive approach to addressing specific hazards associated with these types of steel wire ropes. By identifying potential risks in Clause 4, the standard provides a proactive framework for ensuring safety in lift operations. This is crucial in an industry where the reliability of tools and materials directly impacts user safety. The standard's inclusion of minimum breaking force values for various classes, sizes, and grades of rope-detailed in Tables 6 to 10-is another significant strength. This guidance aids manufacturers and users alike in selecting appropriate materials that meet safety and performance expectations. Moreover, by excluding requirements for ropes fitted with terminations, the standard maintains its focus on the specific components that directly affect the performance of stranded ropes in the context of lifts. Overall, EN 12385-5:2021+A1:2025 remains an authoritative resource designed to enhance safety and reliability in the use of steel wire ropes for various lifting applications. It emphasizes the importance of compliance with safety standards in the manufacturing and testing of these critical components, ensuring that only the best practices are applied in the industry.
