INTERNATIONAL ELECTROTECHNICAL COMMISSION
ELECTRICAL ACCESSORIES -
CABLE REELS FOR HOUSEHOLD AND
SIMILAR PURPOSES
FOREWORD
The IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) is a worldwide organization for standardization
1)
comprising all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of the IEC is to
promote international cooperation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and
electronic fields. To this end and in addition to other activities, the IEC publishes International Standards.
Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in
the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and
non-governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. The IEC
collaborates closely with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with
conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
The formal decisions or agreements of the IEC on technical matters, prepared by technical committees on
2)
which all the National Committees having a special interest therein are represented, express, as nearly as
possible, an international consensus of opinion on the subjects dealt with.
They have the form of recommendations for international use published in the form of standards, technical
3)
reports or guides and they are accepted by the National Committees in that sense.
4} In order to promote international unification, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC International
Standards transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional standards. Any
divergence between the IEC Standard and the corresponding national or regional standard shall be clearly
indicated in the latter.
5) The IEC provides no marking procedure to indicate its approval and cannot be rendered responsible for any
equipment declared to be in conformity with one of its standards.
International Standard IEC 1242 has been prepared by sub-committee 23B: Plugs,
socket-outlets and switches, of IEC technical committee 23: Electrical accessories.
The text of this standard is based on the following documents:

Full information on the voting for the approval of this standard can be found in the repo
on voting indicated in the above table.
In this standard, the following print types are used:

ELECTRICAL ACCESSORIES -
CABLE REELS FOR HOUSEHOLD AND
SIMILAR PURPOSES
1 Scope
This International Standard applies to cable reels for a.c. only, provided with a
non-detachable flexible cable with a rated voltage above 50 V and not exceeding 250 V for
single-phase cable reels and above 50 V and not exceeding 440 V for all other cable
reels, and a rated current not exceeding 16 A. They are intended for household,
commercial and light industrial and similar purposes, either indoors or outdoors, with
particular reference to safety in normal use.
Cable reeling devices incorporated in appliances are under consideration.
Cable reels complying with this standard are suitable for use at ambient temperatures not
normally exceeding 25 °C, but occasionally reaching 35 °C. In locations where special
conditions prevail, special construction may be required.
NOTE - This standard does not apply to cable reels with a detachable flexible cable.
2 Normative references
The following normative documents contain provisions which, through reference in this
text, constitute provisions of this International Standard. At the time of publication, the
editions indicated were valid. All normative documents are subject to revision, and parties
to agreements based on this International Standard are encouraged to investigate the
possibility of applying the most recent editions of the normative documents indicated
below. Members of IEC and ISO maintain registers of currently valid International
Standards.

4 General requirements
Cable reels shall be so designed and constructed that in normal use their performance is
reliable and without danger to the user and surroundings.
In general, compliance is checked by carrying out all the relevant tests specified.
5 General conditions for type testing
Tests according to this standard are type tests.
5.1
5.2 Unless otherwise specified the tests are made on three samples as delivered.
The components of the cable reels are tested, unless otherwise specified, in accordance
with the requirements of the relevant standard, as applicable.
Unless otherwise specified, the tests are carried out in the order of the clauses, at
5.3
and 35 °C. In case of doubt, the tests are made
an ambient temperature between 15 °C
°C.
at an ambient temperature of 20 °C ± 5
Unless otherwise stated, three samples are submitted to all the tests and the
5.4
requirements are satisfied if all the tests are met.
If only one of the samples does not satisfy a test due to an assembly or manufacturing
fault, which is not representative of the design, that test and any preceding one which may
have influenced the results of the test shall be repeated and also
