prEN IEC 63758-1-1:2026 is the introduction to the Qi Specification Version 2.3, prepared through IEC/CENELEC work and aligned with the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) specification. It explains what Qi wireless power transfer is, which products it covers, and how the wider Qi document set is organized for manufacturers, designers, test labs, and compliance teams.

What does prEN IEC 63758-1-1:2026 specify?

prEN IEC 63758-1-1:2026 introduces the Qi wireless power transfer system and sets out the context for the rest of the Qi specification suite. It focuses on flat-surface devices such as mobile phones and tablets and describes the basic operating range, product types, communication approach, and document structure.

SectionTopic
1About the Wireless Power Consortium
2What the Qi wireless power transfer system is
3How Qi wireless power transfer works
4Qi wireless power transfer features
5Structure of the Qi Specification

The document explains Qi as a system for wireless charging and power transfer, not as a general-purpose power supply standard. It also points readers to the companion parts that cover the technical detail.

What are the key requirements of prEN IEC 63758-1-1:2026?

prEN IEC 63758-1-1:2026 is mainly an explanatory introduction, but it still gives the core technical points that shape Qi products and tests. The most important items are in Sections 3 and 4.

Power levels and profiles

Section 4.1 says Qi applies to wireless power transfer from at least 5 W up to an architectural limit of about 30 W of load power. It distinguishes the Baseline Power Profile at 5 W or less and the Extended Power Profile up to 15 W, with power negotiated between the Power Transmitter and Power Receiver before charging starts.

In practice, this means a receiver asks for the power it needs and the transmitter delivers only what has been agreed. That matters for interoperability, because a Qi receiver can work with different transmitter power levels without being overdriven.

Operating frequency and coupling

Section 4.2 gives a typical operating frequency range of 87 to 205 kHz. Section 4.4 explains that coupling is best when the transmitter and receiver use matching coils, are well aligned, are close together, and have ferrite shielding.

In practice, alignment and spacing affect charging speed and efficiency. Designers need to manage coil geometry, product thickness, and foreign materials that can reduce coupling.

Charging area and coil arrangement

Section 4.3 describes a basic single-coil arrangement with a 50 mm outer diameter coil in the Power Transmitter and a 40 mm outer diameter coil in the Power Receiver. It also allows multiple transmitter coils in an array to support larger charging areas and better tolerance to misalignment.

This matters when designing pads, stands, furniture, or vehicle-integrated chargers. A wider charging area helps users place devices more freely, but the product still has to pass Qi compliance tests.

Communication and control

Section 4.1 identifies the Baseline Protocol as unidirectional communication from Power Receiver to Power Transmitter for power transfers at or below 5 W. It also identifies the Extended Protocol as bidirectional communication for power transfers up to 15 W and for enhanced foreign object detection.

Section 4.5 explains the physical signalling: the Power Receiver uses amplitude shift keying (ASK) by modulating its reflected impedance, while the Power Transmitter uses frequency shift keying (FSK) by modulating its operating frequency. In practice, this is how the two ends exchange requests, status, and control information.

Foreign object detection

Section 4.6 says Qi systems must detect foreign objects that could heat up in the magnetic field and take appropriate action. The document does not define one single detection method; instead, compliance testing checks that reference foreign objects do not overheat in reference scenarios.

For product teams, that means foreign object detection is a safety and validation issue, not just a feature. Cases, coins, keys, or other conductive items can affect performance and must be considered in design and testing.

What terms does prEN IEC 63758-1-1:2026 define?

  • Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) - The organization that develops and maintains the Qi specification.
  • Power Transmitter (PTx) - The charger-side subsystem that creates the magnetic field and sends power.
  • Power Receiver (PRx) - The device-side subsystem that receives power and converts it for use or battery charging.
  • Baseline Power Profile - The Qi operating profile for power transfers of 5 W or less.
  • Extended Power Profile - The Qi operating profile for power transfers up to 15 W.
  • Foreign object detection (FOD) - The process of identifying unwanted conductive objects in the charging field and preventing unsafe heating.
  • Magnetic Power Profile (MPP) - The Qi profile family that supports higher-power operation and related communications and power delivery functions.

Who uses prEN IEC 63758-1-1:2026?

prEN IEC 63758-1-1:2026 is used by product designers, compliance engineers, and test laboratories working on Qi-enabled chargers and devices. It is relevant to smartphones, tablets, power banks, wearables, headsets, cameras, shavers, furniture with embedded chargers, and automotive charging systems.

Buyers and integrators use it to understand what a Qi product family covers and which companion parts are needed for detailed design or verification work. It is also useful for teams comparing standalone chargers, embedded transmitters, and receiver designs.

Which standards are used with prEN IEC 63758-1-1:2026?

The Qi Specification is presented as a document set, and this introduction points to the companion parts that carry the technical detail:

  • Glossary - Definitions, acronyms, and symbols.
  • Technical System Overview - Basic concepts, alignment, power profiles, block diagram, communication protocols, authentication, FOD, and compliance testing.
  • Power Profiles - PTx and PRx power profiles, magnetic covers, and mechanical, thermal, and user interface topics.
  • Mechanical, Thermal, and User Interface - Design guidance, surface temperature rise, and user interface requirements.
  • Power Delivery - Receiver and transmitter construction, power consumption, load steps, over-voltage protection, and power levels.
  • Communications Physical Layer - Load modulation and FSK.
  • Communications Protocol - Identification, ping, configuration, negotiation, power transfer, and data packets.
  • Foreign Object Detection - Methods for avoiding foreign object heating.
  • Authentication Protocol - Certificates, private keys, messages, timing, and protocol flow.
  • MPP suite - MPP communications, magnetics, power delivery, physical layer, FOD, and design guidelines.
  • Active Alignment, Magnetic Covers, Thermal Management Protocol - Specialized topics for alignment, cover effects, and thermal control.

What does the prEN IEC 63758-1-1:2026 document contain?

The document contains explanatory text, figures, and one table that maps the Qi document family to its topics. It uses figures to show the evolution from corded devices to wirelessly charged products, the coil-based charging arrangement, and the main wireless power transfer concepts.

It also describes product examples, charger types, operating frequency, coupling conditions, communication methods, and foreign object detection. For engineers and test teams, that makes it a starting point for understanding the Qi architecture before moving to the more detailed companion parts.
