Overview
SIST EN 764-2:2012 is a key European Standard developed by CEN that defines the basic quantities, symbols, and units to be used for pressure equipment and assemblies. This standard is essential for compliance with the European Directive 97/23/EC, which governs pressure equipment safety throughout the EU. By standardizing terminology and unit usage, SIST EN 764-2:2012 ensures clear communication and uniform documentation across all stakeholders involved in pressure equipment design, manufacture, inspection, and operation.
The standard supersedes EN 764-2:2002 and aligns with international measurement systems including the International System of Units (SI units) and relevant ISO standards, particularly from the ISO 80000 series which cover quantities and units for natural sciences and technology.
Key Topics
Basic Quantities and Symbols
SIST EN 764-2:2012 specifies standard symbols for physical quantities such as time, length, pressure, force, temperature, and mechanical stress relevant to pressure equipment. It ensures these symbols match international guidelines while accommodating specific industry needs.Units of Measurement
The units prescribed are primarily SI units, complemented by suitable decimal multiples or submultiples to keep numerical values within practical, manageable ranges (typically between 0.1 and 1000). For example, pressure is commonly expressed in bar or MPa, with one bar equal to 0.1 MPa.Tables of Quantities and Units
The standard includes detailed tabulations covering:- General quantities (time, length, volume, density, power, angle, etc.)
- Mechanical and thermodynamic quantities (force, moment, stress, temperature, modulus of elasticity, hardness, safety factors, etc.)
References to ISO Standards
SIST EN 764-2:2012 references the ISO 80000 series, which define the scientific basis for quantities and units, ensuring compatibility and coherence with international measurement standards used in engineering and technology.Compliance with Pressure Equipment Directive
The standard supports the requirements of Directive 97/23/EC, ensuring that all pressure equipment across European markets adheres to a consistent system of measurement and symbol usage for safety, certification, and interoperability.
Applications
Pressure Vessel Design and Manufacturing
Designers and engineers utilize SIST EN 764-2:2012 to apply correct units and symbols consistently in technical drawings, specifications, and calculations for pressure vessels and gas cylinders.Regulatory Compliance and Certification
Manufacturers and certification bodies rely on this standard to meet mandatory European regulations and facilitate smooth approval processes for pressure equipment.Inspection and Quality Assurance
Inspectors and quality control teams use the standardized quantities and symbols to interpret technical data, verify compliance, and ensure safe operation of pressure assemblies.Technical Documentation and Communication
The standard ensures that documentation such as operating instructions, safety datasheets, and maintenance manuals communicate measurements effectively to all stakeholders, including international audiences.Instrumentation and Gauging
The use of consistent units and symbols is critical in the calibration and installation of pressure gauges, temperature sensors, and other instrumentation devices used in pressure equipment monitoring.
