Furniture - Assessment of the ignitability of mattresses and upholstered bedbases - Part 1: Ignition source smouldering cigarette

This European Standard specifies a test method to assess the ignitability of mattresses, upholstered bed bases or mattress pads when subjected to a smouldering cigarette as an ignition source.
Air mattresses and water beds are excluded from this standard.
The standard contains one annex:

Diese Europäische Norm legt ein Prüfverfahren zur Beurteilung der Entzündbarkeit von Matratzen, gepolsterten Bettböden oder Matratzenauflagen fest, wenn diese einer glimmenden Zigarette als Zündquelle ausgesetzt sind.
Luftmatratzen und Wasserbetten werden in dieser Norm nicht behandelt.

La présente Norme européenne décrit une méthode d’essai pour évaluer l'allumabilité de matelas ou de sommiers ou sur-matelas rembourrés, lorsqu'ils sont soumis à une source d’allumage représentée par une cigarette en combustion.
Les matelas à air et les lits à eau sont exclus de la présente norme.
La présente norme comporte une annexe : Annexe A (informative) Modèle de rapport d’essai.

Overview

EN 597-1:2015 is a CEN European Standard that specifies a laboratory test method to assess the ignitability of mattresses, mattress pads and upholstered bed bases when exposed to a smouldering cigarette. Air mattresses and water beds are explicitly excluded. The standard defines test apparatus, specimen preparation, environmental conditioning, ignition procedure and criteria for determining progressive smouldering or flaming ignition. Annex A provides a model test report form.

• Ignition source: un-tipped cylindrical smouldering cigarette with length (68 ± 2) mm, diameter (8 ± 0.5) mm and mass (0.85 ± 0.15) g. Smouldering rate: (7.5 ± 2) min per 40 mm (measured under specified conditions).
• Test rig: expanded steel/open mesh platform of at least 450 mm × 450 mm, supported ≥75 mm above a solid base.
• Enclosure/airflow: either a room >20 m3 or a smaller enclosure with through-flow; local air speed < 0.2 m/s to avoid disturbing burning behaviour.
• Conditioning and test atmosphere:
  • Conditioning: at least 24 h at 23 ± 2 °C, 50 ± 5% RH.
  • Testing: temperature 10–30 °C, relative humidity 15–80%.
• Specimen sizes:
  • Small scale: rectangular specimen minimum 450 × 450 mm with nominal thickness and representative edge/finish (quilt, tuft, piping).
  • Full size: 1:1 sample of the actual product.
• Application procedure: two smouldering cigarettes placed on representative upper-surface locations (e.g., tape edge, quilt groove). The foreword allows a third cigarette if initial sources self-extinguish.
• Ignition criteria:
  • Progressive smouldering defined by behaviours such as sustained smouldering to full thickness, smouldering after 1 hour, or escalating self-propagating smouldering.
  • Any occurrence of flaming initiated by the cigarette is recorded as flaming ignition.
• Health & safety: tests present hazards - use a non-combustible fume cupboard or appropriate enclosure and have extinguishing means readily available.

Practical uses include pre-production material selection, verification testing of finished mattresses/bed bases, supplier qualification and demonstrating safer product performance against smouldering cigarette hazards.
