SIST EN 3475-407:2009 is the Slovenian adoption of EN 3475-407:2009 for aerospace electrical cables. It specifies two methods for determining the flammability characteristics of a finished cable and is intended to be used together with EN 3475-100.

What does SIST EN 3475-407:2009 specify?

SIST EN 3475-407:2009 sets out a test-method standard for finished aerospace cables. Its job is to show how to prepare specimens, apply a flame, and judge whether the cable meets the flammability acceptance criteria.

The document is organized into these main clauses:

  • Scope
  • Normative references
  • Equipment
  • Procedures
  • Acceptance criteria
Clause / partWhat it covers
Clause 3Test chamber and burner requirements
Clause 4.1Method 1
Clause 4.2Method 2
Clause 4.3How to complete and record the test
Clause 5Acceptance criteria

What are the key requirements of SIST EN 3475-407:2009?

SIST EN 3475-407:2009 gives two different flame tests for a finished cable. Method 1 is the main cable-flammability test, while Method 2 checks flame behavior at the insulation-to-conductor junction. In practice, this lets a manufacturer or lab verify cable behavior under two different exposure conditions.

Test equipment and set-up

SIST EN 3475-407:2009 requires a test chamber of defined minimum size, open at the top and front, and a Bunsen type gas burner with specified geometry and gas capability. The chamber is placed in a draught-free environment, and the note warns that toxic fumes may be released, so the chamber should be in a fume cabinet. This matters because the test result depends on controlled airflow and flame shape.

Method 1 specimen preparation and flame application

SIST EN 3475-407:2009 Method 1 uses two sets of three specimens, each about 900 mm long, taken consecutively from the same coil. The specimens are conditioned at controlled temperature and humidity before testing. The cable is mounted at an angle, the flame is applied for 15 s to one set and 30 s to the other, and the flame is aimed at a defined point on the specimen. This gives a repeatable check of how the finished cable spreads flame along its length.

Method 2 specimen preparation and flame application

SIST EN 3475-407:2009 Method 2 uses three specimens about 450 mm long, also taken consecutively from the same coil and conditioned before testing. One end of the insulation is stripped back, the specimen is mounted vertically, and a 38 mm high soft yellow flame is applied at the junction of insulation and bare conductor for 15 s. This method focuses on ignition and propagation at the exposed conductor end, which is important for cables with stripped terminations.

Completion of the test and acceptance

SIST EN 3475-407:2009 requires the operator to record how long flaming continues after burner removal and the length of cable that burns. For both methods, no flaming droplets or particles are allowed to fall from the specimen during ignition and combustion. Method 1 also requires cessation of flaming within the time stated in the product standard and a total burnt length of 50 mm. Method 2 requires flaming to stop within 10 s and the burnt or charred length to stay within 75 mm. In practice, the product standard controls the Method 1 burn time limit.

What terms does SIST EN 3475-407:2009 use?

  • Finished cable - a cable in its final manufactured form, ready for evaluation as a product.
  • Flammability characteristics - the cable’s behavior when exposed to a flame, especially how it ignites and how far burning spreads.
  • Specimen - the cut test piece taken from the cable coil for the flame test.
  • Burnt length - the measured length of cable damaged by flame or charring after the burner is removed.
  • Flaming droplets or particles - burning material that falls away from the specimen during the test, which is not permitted.
  • Method 1 - the test route that applies flame to a mounted cable specimen at a defined angle and position.
  • Method 2 - the test route that applies flame at the insulation-to-conductor junction on a vertically mounted specimen.

Who uses SIST EN 3475-407:2009?

SIST EN 3475-407:2009 is used by aerospace cable manufacturers, test laboratories, quality engineers, and certification or conformity assessment teams. Buyers and technical specifiers also use it when they need a common flammability test for aircraft-use electrical cables. It is relevant wherever cable flammability must be demonstrated against aerospace requirements.

What changed in SIST EN 3475-407:2009 from the previous edition?

SIST EN 3475-407:2009 supersedes EN 3475-407:2005.

Which standards are used with SIST EN 3475-407:2009?

  • EN 3475-100 - the general test-method standard that this part is intended to be used with.
  • FAR 25, Airworthiness standards - Transport category airplanes - referenced because Method 1 notes that the 30 s burn exposure is needed to assess FAR 25 requirements.
  • JAR 25, Large aeroplanes - referenced alongside FAR 25 for the same reason.

What does the SIST EN 3475-407:2009 document contain?

SIST EN 3475-407:2009 contains the equipment description, specimen preparation steps, flame-setting instructions, mounting arrangements, flame application times, and post-test measurements needed to run the two methods. It also includes two figures showing the mounting configurations for the specimens. The document is written for test execution and acceptance, not for design calculation or product construction.
