Overview
EN ISO 1107:2017 - Fishing nets: Netting - Basic terms and definitions (ISO 1107:2017) is a harmonized European/ISO terminology standard prepared by ISO/TC 38 (Textiles) and adopted by CEN. It defines the principal terms and the methods for expressing key dimensions used for netting in fishing gear. The standard clarifies vocabulary for netting yarns, mesh types, mesh size, directions (N‑direction, T‑direction, AB‑direction), and size conventions used when describing netting construction.
Key topics and requirements
The standard provides precise, practical definitions used across fishing-net manufacturing, specification and testing. Major technical topics include:
Netting and netting yarn
- Definitions of netting, yarn, netting twine, cabled twine and braided cord.
- Size of netting yarn indicated by linear density (tex) and resultant linear density (see referenced ISO methods).
Mesh types and geometry
- Types: diamond mesh, square mesh, hexagonal mesh.
- Mesh side length (distance between consecutive knots/joints, centre to centre when fully extended).
- Mesh length and mesh opening definitions given separately for knotted and knotless netting with clear measurement directions.
Knotted vs knotless netting
- Definitions and direction conventions: N‑direction (depthwise, normal to course of yarn), T‑direction (lengthwise, parallel to yarn).
- AB‑direction: rectilinear sequence of mesh bars independent of general yarn directions.
Size and mesh statistics
- Size of netting expressed as meshes long (ML) × meshes deep (MD), or meshes in one direction × length in a unit (e.g., metres).
- Average mesh length and average mesh side length definitions for quality control and specification.
Applications and users
EN ISO 1107:2017 is essential for anyone specifying, manufacturing, testing or regulating fishing nets:
- Net manufacturers and textile engineers - for consistent product descriptions, drawings and labeling.
- Fisheries gear designers and R&D - to communicate mesh geometry and orientation in design and modeling.
- Procurement and quality assurance teams - to set unambiguous purchase specs and inspection criteria.
- Regulators and certification bodies - to reference standard terms in legislation, permits and conformity assessments.
- Researchers and technical writers - as a controlled vocabulary for publications and standards harmonization.
Using the standard reduces ambiguity in contracts, improves comparability of products, and supports compliance with fisheries management measures that reference mesh size and net construction.
Related standards
- ISO 1530 (referenced for additional characteristics and designation)
- ISO 858 and ISO 1139 (bibliography references for yarn linear density and resultant linear density)
- ISO 10241-1 (terminological entry rules cited in the foreword)

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out
through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical
committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International
organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of
electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are
described in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular the different approval criteria needed for the
different types of ISO documents should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the
editorial rules of the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www .iso .org/ directives).
