Overview
SIST EN 16223-1:2022 is a European standard developed by CEN that establishes clear requirements for the designation and description of leather used specifically in upholstery applications. This standard supports consistent communication and marketing practices within the upholstered furniture industry across Europe. It ensures that terms like "leather" or "part leather" are applied accurately and transparently, protecting consumers and promoting trust in product labeling.
The scope of SIST EN 16223-1:2022 focuses exclusively on leather in upholstered furniture and seating. It excludes other furniture parts such as wood or metal, purely decorative elements, and leather used in other sectors like footwear, clothing, or automotive interiors (which are covered under EN 16223-2).
Key Topics
Designation of Leather: The use of the term “leather” is strictly reserved for upholstered furniture where visible surface areas are genuinely made from leather. The standard prohibits labeling that could mislead the consumer regarding material composition.
Contact vs. Non-contact Areas: The distinction between contact areas (parts of furniture that come into direct contact with the body) and non-contact areas is critical. If only contact areas use leather, the furniture must be described as “part leather.” If any contact area contains non-leather materials, the term “part leather” must not be used.
Accurate Terminology: The standard aligns with EN 15987, which defines key leather trade terminology. Descriptions like “full grain leather” or “nappa leather” must comply with these definitions to maintain consistency.
Multimaterial Designations: When multiple materials are used visibly, they must be listed in descending order by area or prominence, enabling clear customer understanding.
Transparency and Consumer Protection: The guiding principle is to avoid misleading designations by accurately reflecting the leather content and its visible use on the product.
Applications
SIST EN 16223-1:2022 is essential for:
Furniture Manufacturers: To label products accurately for advertising, exhibiting, and shipping, ensuring compliance with European market expectations.
Retailers and Marketers: To provide transparent product descriptions that foster consumer confidence and support informed purchasing decisions.
Quality Assurance Teams: To verify that upholstery meets prescribed definitions of leather content, supporting consistent product quality.
Regulatory Bodies and Industry Stakeholders: To harmonize leather labeling practices and facilitate cross-border trade by adhering to a common standard.
Related Standards
EN 16223-2: This sister part of the standard covers leather requirements and designations specifically for automotive interior applications.
EN 15987: Provides the essential terminology and definitions for leather trade, ensuring uniform language and understanding in descriptions.
International Council of Tanners Code of Practice: Although not a formal standard, the ICT Code of Practice influences the approach taken in SIST EN 16223-1:2022 regarding the correct designation of leather in upholstery.
