(Main)Aerospace series - Bearing, spherical, plain, in corrosion resisting steel - Narrow series - Dimensions and loads - Inch series
- Abstract
This document specifies the characteristics of inch based spherical plain bearing, metal to metal, in corrosion resisting steel, narrow series.
They are intended for use in fixed or moving parts of the aircraft structure and their control mechanisms.
They are used in the temperature range as determined by the grease capability as below:
- code A: greased as per MIL-PRF-23827 Type I, operating temperature range −73 °C to 121 °C;
- code B: greased as per MIL-PRF-81322, operating temperature range −54 °C to 177 °C.
The range of application for bearings lubricated with grease per code A is limited to 121 °C.
In both cases the spherical surface of the outer or inner ring are provided with a dry-film lubricant as per MIL-PRF-46010 or equivalent (anti-seizing protection).
The slide hole treatment either at the outer ring or inner ring.

kSIST FprEN 6046:2025 is a CEN aerospace standard for inch-based spherical plain bearings in corrosion resisting steel, narrow series. It specifies the dimensions, loads, clearances, materials, surface treatment, marking and quality rules for bearings used in aircraft structure and control mechanisms, including grease code A and code B service conditions.
What does kSIST FprEN 6046:2025 specify?
kSIST FprEN 6046:2025 covers metal-to-metal spherical plain bearings in corrosion resisting steel for fixed or moving aircraft structural parts and control mechanisms. The document is organized into clauses 1 to 8, with Figures 1 to 5 and Tables 1 to 3 providing the design and performance data.
The scope also defines the lubrication conditions, dry-film protection and slide-hole treatment used with these bearings. In practice, that means the buyer or designer has to choose the bearing code set that matches the temperature, lubrication and installation method.
What are the key requirements of kSIST FprEN 6046:2025?
kSIST FprEN 6046:2025 ties the product to a small set of design, material and performance rules that matter directly in selection and acceptance.
- Clause 1 defines code A and code B grease conditions, each linked to a MIL-PRF grease and a service temperature range. Code A is limited to 121 °C, so it suits lower-temperature applications only.
- Clause 4.1 says configuration, dimensions, tolerances and mass follow Figures 1-2 and Table 1, and the values apply after surface treatment. That means final inspection should be done on the finished part, not on an untreated blank.
- Clause 4.2 gives the surface roughness requirements from Figures 1-2, with values applying before surface treatment. This separates machining checks from coating checks.
- Clause 4.3 assigns the ring materials: the inner ring uses EN 2030 material, and the outer ring uses EN 3161 material, each with a specified hardness band. This is the basis for material certification and hardness control.
- Clause 4.4 defines surface-treatment options, including the basic condition and code Z, which adds cadmium plating on the outer ring followed by chromating. The same clause also distinguishes code S and code R for bearings without or with swaging grooves.
- Clause 4.5 links loads and clearances to Tables 2 and 3. The load table separates permissible and ultimate static loads, and notes that installed push-out loads may be lower than the table values.
- Clause 5 builds the designation from the standard number, grease code, clearance code, diameter code, grease-hole code, swaging-groove code and surface-treatment code. That gives a single ordering and specification string.
- Clause 6 requires marking in accordance with EN 2424, style A, and allows the manufacturer part number. Clause 8 requires an approved aerospace production organization, a quality management system and a documented qualification procedure.
What terms does kSIST FprEN 6046:2025 define?
kSIST FprEN 6046:2025 uses a few key symbols and codes that are important for design and checking.
- spherical plain bearing - a metal-to-metal bearing with spherical contact surfaces that allows angular movement.
- code A - the grease condition based on MIL-PRF-23827 Type I for the lower operating temperature range.
- code B - the grease condition based on MIL-PRF-81322 for the wider, higher-temperature range.
- code E / F / G - the grease-hole configurations: no grease holes, grease holes on the inner ring, or grease holes on the outer ring.
- α - the maximum angle of tilt between the outer ring and inner ring while the spherical surfaces remain fully in contact.
- Clearance - the radial or axial play defined and tested according to EN 2337.
- dmp, Dmp, ds, Ds - the symbols for mean diameter deviations and single diameter deviations used for tolerance control.
Who uses kSIST FprEN 6046:2025?
kSIST FprEN 6046:2025 is used by aerospace bearing manufacturers, airframe designers, control-system engineers, buyers and quality teams. They use it to select a bearing size and code combination, specify materials and surface treatment, check loads and clearances, and verify marking and qualification before release or acceptance.
What changed in kSIST FprEN 6046:2025 from the previous edition?
kSIST FprEN 6046:2025 supersedes EN 6046:2020. The listed technical changes are updated normative references and a correction to the alpha value for diameter codes 14 and 16 in Table 1.
Which standards are used with kSIST FprEN 6046:2025?
kSIST FprEN 6046:2025 relies on several companion standards and referenced documents:
- EN 2030 - material specification for the inner ring.
- EN 3161 - material specification for the outer ring.
- EN 2133 - cadmium plating used for code Z.
- EN 2337 - technical specification, including load and clearance definitions and testing.
- EN 2424 - marking of aerospace products.
- ISO 8075 - surface treatment of hardenable stainless steel parts.
- ISO 1132-1 - tolerance terms and symbols.
- TR 4475 - vocabulary plus definitions for loads and clearance.
- EN 9100 and EN 9133 - quality management and qualification procedure references used in Clause 8.
- MIL-PRF-23827, MIL-PRF-81322 and MIL-PRF-46010 - grease and dry-film lubricant conditions named in the scope.
What does the kSIST FprEN 6046:2025 document contain?
Figures 1 and 2 show the bearing forms, including the S and R swaging-groove versions and the treated surfaces. Figures 3 to 5 show the grease-hole arrangements for codes E, F and G. Tables 1 to 3 provide the dimensions, tolerances, mass, loads and clearances used for design and acceptance. Clause 5 gives the designation structure, Clause 6 covers marking, and Clause 8 sets the production and qualification expectations.
