This document covers vertically mounted types of manual or powered, operable fabric curtain assemblies with downward closing operation. Curtain systems are different from (are separated from) door systems due to their not rigid closure element typically made of thin walled materials as for instance woven or knitted fabrics and foils. These closure elements are not able to carry significant loads normal to their surface by their bending stiffness. In other words: curtain systems are separated from door systems because they can only conduct pulling forces by tensile stress in plane to their surface. Pushing forces are not conducted in plane to their surface.
This document establishes the methodology for extending the application of test results obtained from test(s) conducted in accordance with the EN 1634-1 test method for shutters.

This European Standard specifies a method for characterizing the influence on fire performance of items of building hardware for incorporation into hinged or pivoted vertically installed fire door assemblies (having either one or two leaves) or vertically installed openable window assemblies, of known fire resistance of up to and including 240 minutes integrity (and where relevant insulation) in accordance with EN 1634-1. It applies to the testing of building hardware for use on hinged and pivoted doors and openable windows which include framed glazed doors and windows, but not glass doors. It does not include a test for durability or other performance characteristics, which should be evaluated according to the product standard for the item of building hardware or as given in EN 14600.
The method is suitable for characterizing building hardware for use on non-metallic door or window assemblies consisting of cellulosic materials or mineral boards faced with cellulosic materials, hung in either cellulosic, mineral cored or metal frames: or conventional steel doors made from sheet steel, not more than 1,5 mm thick, hung in steel frames (steel doors include doors filled with mineral board or mineral fibre cores but not steel clad timber/cellulosic doors). The size of these assemblies can be up to that given in the field of direct application for the door leaf construction concerned.
This method is not directly appropriate for evaluating building hardware for use on glass or glazed doors with decorative perimeter framing. The appropriateness of this method of test can be established by reference to the flow chart given in Annex A.
This European Standard does not constitute a fire resistance test for a leaf, window, frame, intumescent seal, or anything other than the selected item of building hardware. The use of any resulting field of direct application is restricted to leaf and frame constructions which have been successfully tested to EN 1634-1.

This European Standard sets out the general principles for the extended application of test results obtained on fire resisting and smoke control doorsets including their elements of building hardware, i.e. the types of pedestrian and industrial doors and openable windows listed in the Introduction above when tested in accordance with EN 1634-1 and/or EN 1634-3.
This document provides the general principles which are intended to be used in conjunction with the relevant part of EN 15269 depending upon the specific product type to be evaluated.
The rules to evaluate the field of direct application of fire resisting or smoke control door, shutter and openable window assemblies are given in EN 1634-1 or EN 1634-3 respectively and are based on the results of a single test. These rules relate to the more common forms of product constructions for which experience of testing has provided the knowledge that such variations can be safely accepted. The extent of the permitted variations is generally conservative and is based on the minimum level of common agreement achieved.
This European Standard identifies the principles to be followed during the preparation of the subsequent product related standards of the EN 15269 series which define the rules for the permitted variations of products from the tested specimen. These rules, which are created in a committee by agreed expert opinion  based on experience of fire resistance testing and interpolation of test results, will form the basis of the field of extended application. When these rules are applied by a body suitably notified for the purpose, they will lead to a classification suitable for the application of a CE marking to the modified product.

Subject to the completion of the appropriate test or tests selected from those identified in Clause 4, the extended application may cover all or some of the following non-exhaustive list of examples:
-   uninsulated (E), radiation (EW) or insulated (EI1 or EI2) classifications;
-   coiling mechanisms;
-   wall/ceiling fixed elements;
-   items of building hardware;
-   decorative finishes;
-   intumescent, draught or acoustic seals;
-   alternative supporting construction(s).

- openable fabric curtains.
This European Standard is used in conjunction with EN 1363-1.
Doors tested in accordance with this European Standard and classified in accordance with EN 13501-2 may be accepted for lift landing door applications as an alternative to EN 81-58. EN 81-58 represents a specific test for lift landing doors and results in an alternative classification which may not be suitable for some other purposes as defined in National Regulations.
The testing of fire dampers is covered by EN 1366-2.
The testing of closures for conveyor systems is covered by EN 1366-7.
Further requirements are described in the relevant product standard and in the supporting standard EN 14600.
This method may also be used to determine the fire resistance of non-loadbearing horizontally orientated doors, shutters and openable windows by analogy. However, these are not specifically addressed here and the field of direct application given in Clause 13 is not valid for such horizontally orientated products.
By prior agreement with the test sponsor additional information may be gained for individual elements of building hardware. Based on the observations recorded during the test, the results may be presented in a separate report.
