This document (EN ISO 22748:2021) has been prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 173 "Assistive
products" in collaboration with Technical Committee CEN/TC 293 “Assistive products and accessibility”
the secretariat of which is held by SIS.
This European Standard shall be given the status of a national standard, either by publication of an
identical text or by endorsement, at the latest by January 2022, and conflicting national standards shall
be withdrawn at the latest by January 2022.

Introduction
Incontinence is defined as the complaint of any involuntary leakage of urine and/or faeces. It is
estimated that 400 million people are affected by incontinence worldwide and the number is increasing
as the population in many countries ages. Incontinence that cannot be (fully) cured is most commonly
managed using absorbent products.
Products come in a range of different designs but the terms that are currently used to describe the
product types vary considerably among - and even within – countries, resulting in a confusing variety
of synonyms among clinicians and academics and in the literature provided by pro
