Overview

oSIST prEN IEC 63640:2026 establishes essential safety requirements for LED modules designed for horticultural lighting applications. Published by SIST, this international standard aligns with the prEN IEC 63640:2026 draft, providing a safety framework for LED modules when operated on DC supplies up to 1,500 V or AC supplies up to 1,000 V. This standard does not address performance specifications; its primary focus is on ensuring electrical, thermal, mechanical, and photobiological safety in environments such as greenhouses, vertical farms, and controlled-environment agriculture.

The document is relevant for manufacturers, designers, and integrators developing LED lighting solutions specifically for horticulture. By defining classification and safety requirements, oSIST prEN IEC 63640:2026 contributes to safe installation and use of horticultural lighting systems globally.

Key Topics

This standard covers several major safety aspects for horticultural LED modules:

  • Classification: Defines categories of LED modules based on their intended use, such as unrestricted use and industrial/professional use. Modules for industrial/professional use typically require supervised installation and are not generally user-replaceable.
  • General Safety Requirements: References the foundational requirements of IEC 62031 for LED modules, extending them for horticultural lighting.
  • Marking and Documentation: Specifies labeling and technical information obligations, including warnings about photobiological hazards where necessary.
  • Electrical Safety: Requires compliance with electrical safety provisions to prevent risks such as electrical shock.
  • Thermal & Mechanical Safety: Sets out conditions to mitigate heat and mechanical risks associated with LED modules operating in horticultural settings.
  • Photobiological Safety: Details the assessment and classification of potential photobiological hazards according to risk levels established by IEC 62471, with additional controls for modules used in professional environments.
  • Abnormal and Fault Conditions: Considers module behavior and safety under fault or abnormal operation scenarios.

Applications

oSIST prEN IEC 63640:2026 is critical wherever LED modules for horticultural lighting are used. Key practical applications include:

  • Greenhouses & Indoor Farms: Ensures that lighting fixtures for growing vegetables, flowers, and medicinal plants comply with robust safety principles.
  • Vertical Farming and Plant Factories: Facilitates the deployment of safe, high-intensity LED lighting in stacked arrangements and closed environments.
  • Research Facilities: Supports safe experimentation and prototyping of plant growth with advanced lighting technologies.
  • Commercial Horticulture: Enables reliable and safe integration of LED modules into large-scale agricultural operations.

By implementing this standard, organizations improve user safety, reduce liability, and support international interoperability of horticultural lighting products.

Related Standards

oSIST prEN IEC 63640:2026 references and complements the following international standards:

  • IEC 62471:Photobiological safety of lamps and lamp systems - Defines how to evaluate and classify photobiological hazards in light sources.
  • IEC 62031:LED modules – Safety requirements - The parent standard for the safety of LED modules, covering general requirements applicable to all LED modules.
  • IEC 63545:Horticultural lighting – Luminaires for horticultural lighting - Safety - Addresses broader luminaire safety considerations for horticultural lighting products.

Adherence to these related standards ensures a comprehensive approach to the safety and regulatory compliance of horticultural LED modules, supporting safe innovation and growth in modern agriculture.
