Overview

EN 4855-05:2025 (CEN) defines a standardized test procedure and calculation method to evaluate the performance and energy efficiency of trash compactors used on commercial aircraft. The standard establishes how to measure compaction cycles, standby and cycle energy use, and total trash volume capacity, and it specifies calculation steps to derive the Energy Consumption Index (ECI) and Performance Index (PI) for consistent benchmarking.

Key Topics

  • Scope and purpose: Standardizes test and calculation procedures to identify performance characteristics and trash volume capacity ratings for galley trash compactors.
  • Test conditions: Uses the general conditions of EN 4855-01:2025 (environmental conditions, power supply and measurement equipment requirements). Standby energy is recorded over a 1-hour interval.
  • Test medium: A standardized waste mix is packed in 20 L bags (or 10 L/5 L if required). The mix includes items such as juice cartons, plastic cups, napkins, a PET bottle and a small cardboard box to represent typical cabin waste.
  • Measurements required:
    • Electrical energy consumption during compaction cycles and during standby
    • Compaction cycle time
    • Total trash capacity (sum of volumes of fitted test bags)
    • Equipment mass and empty weight
  • Index calculations:
    • ECI: scales kerosene-equivalent consumption to 100 L of trash capacity and normalizes against a reference value (reference kerosene consumption 13.1 kg/100 L) to produce a dimensionless index.
    • PI: expresses measured trash capacity relative to a reference capacity (120 L) as a percentage-based index.

Applications

This standard is directly applicable to:

  • Aircraft manufacturers and retrofit teams evaluating galley catering equipment
  • Catering equipment designers optimizing compactor energy performance and capacity
  • Airlines and fleet operators comparing equipment options on energy and space efficiency
  • Test laboratories performing conformance testing and producing test reports

Practical outcomes include:

  • Comparable ECI values to assess energy consumption per trash volume
  • PI values to compare capacity against a defined reference
  • A detailed test report template listing deviations, ambient conditions, PN/SN, measured capacities, and energy data as required by the standard

Related Standards

  • EN 4855-01:2025 - Aerospace series: ECO efficiency of catering equipment - Part 01: General conditions (normative reference for environmental, power supply and measurement requirements)

For implementation, testers should follow EN 4855-01 for general conditions and use the calculation sheet format referenced in EN 4855-01:2025. EN 4855-05:2025 enables consistent, repeatable evaluation of trash compactor energy and capacity performance across manufacturers and operators.

Introduction
During aircraft operations, the trash compaction in the cabin is mandatory to maintain the catering on
board. There exist different equipment types to compact the collected trash in order to reduce the space
required for waste storage, differing in waste volume and compaction rate. To meet the target to
determine an energy efficiency index for aircraft trash compactors the purpose of this document is to
standardize the test procedure and efficiency calculations for this equipment type.
