Paper and board - European list of standard grades of recovered paper and board
This list specifies European Standard grades of recovered paper and board which gives a general description of the standard grades by defining what they do and do not contain.
It is not the purpose of this European Standard to specify all the qualities of recovered paper and board that exist in the different markets, but rather to define those qualities most commonly traded in Europe. The description of the standard grades is brief, and for this reason it is recognised that specific deals between buyer and supplier for standard grades with special specifications will still be necessary to meet individual requirements and will not be excluded by any implied regulations associated with the publication of this European Standard.
This standard list contains a group of recovered paper grades (Group 5 "Special qualities") that, in most cases, can only be recycled using specific processes, or can cause some particular constraints to recycling. Their inclusion in the list is justified by the existence of a significant European market. Actual recycling of the qualities can only be done by a limited number of mills located in a few countries only.
Recovered paper from refuse sorting stations is not suitable for use in the paper industry.

Diese Liste legt Europäische Standardsorten für Altpapier fest. Sie enthält eine allgemeine Beschreibung der Standardsorten, indem sie definiert, was sie enthalten, und was sie nicht enthalten sollen.
Es ist nicht Zweck dieser Europäischen Norm, alle Atlpapiere, die auf den verschiedenen Märkten vorhanden sind, zu definieren. Sie soll vielmehr die meisten Gruppen definieren, die gemeinsam in Europa gehandelt werden. Die Be-schreibung der Standardsorten ist kurz. Um individuelle Anforderungen einzuhalten, werden deshalb auch künftig Sondervereinbarungen zwischen Käufer und Lieferant für spezielle Altpapiersorten getroffen. Diese Vereinbarungen werden nicht durch Bestimmungen ausgeschlossen, die in Verbindung mit der Veröffentlichung dieser Europäischen Norm stehen.
Diese Standardsortenliste enthält eine Gruppe mit Altpapiersorten (Gruppe 5 "Sondersorten"), die in den meisten Fällen nur mit einem Spezialverfahren unter Schwierigkeiten rezykliert werden können. Das Ein-beziehen der Gruppe 5 in die Liste ist begründet durch den vorhandenen Europäischen Markt. Das Rezyklieren der Qualitäten kann nur von einer begrenzten Anzahl von Papierfabriken durchgeführt werden, die nur in wenigen Ländern vorhanden sind.

La présente Norme européenne a pour objet d'établir une nomenclature des sortes standard européennes de papiers et cartons récupérés en définissant celles-ci par leur contenu et leurs exclusions éventuelles.
Elle ne vise pas a répertorier toutes les sortes existant sur les différents marchés mais plutôt de définir les sortes le plus couramment commercialisées sur les marchés européens. La description de ces sortes standard est sommaire. C'est la raison pour laquelle il est reconnu que des accords particuliers demeurent nécessaires entre acheteur et fournisseur afin de satisfaire a certaines exigences individuelles et que ces accords ne sauraient etre proscrits par aucune réglementation implicite associée a la publication de la présente Norme européenne.
La présente norme inclut un groupe 5 "Sortes spéciales" qui regroupe les sortes de papier qui, dans la plupart des cas, ne peuvent etre recyclées que par des procédés spécifiques ou dont le recyclage peut entraîner des contraintes particulieres. L'inclusion de ces sortes dans la liste se justifie par l'existence d'un marché européen significatif. Le recyclage de ces qualités ne peut véritablement se faire que dans un nombre limité d'usines situées dans un petit nombre de pays.
Les papiers et cartons récupérés issus du tri sur ordures brutes ne sont pas utilisables par l'industrie papetiere.

Foreword
This European Standard has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 172, "Pulp, paper and board", the
secretariat of which is held by DIN.
This European Standard shall be given the status of a national standard, either by publication of an identical text or
by endorsement, at the latest by June 2002, and conflicting national standards shall be withdrawn at the latest by
June 2002.
This European Standard supersedes EN 643:1994.
With regard to EN 643:1994 the following changes have been made :
a) title has been changed;
b) the classification of raw material qualities was adapted to the market need;
c) a designation was supplemented;
d) taking into consideration the European market, the groups were renumbered;
e) group 5 "special grades" has been created and established;
f) editorial updating.
According to the CEN/CENELEC Internal Regulations, the national standards organizations of the following
countries are bound to implement this European Standard: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland,
France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden,
Switzerland and the United Kingdom.

Introduction
The European list of standard grades of recovered paper and board is for use by industry professionals,
organisations and individuals with an interest in the recovered paper sector to assist in the buying and selling of this
raw material intended for recycling by the paper and board industry.
Paper and board mills may ask for a declaration from the supplier about the origin of the material, in relation to
national regulations or standard requirements.
This list also provides help and support for Customs and Excise Officers who are required to classify these raw
materials from waste in the context of supranational legislation on the control of waste movement.
Recovered paper and board originating from multi material collection systems, containing only material of a
valuable, recyclable nature, has to be specifically marked. It is not permissible to mix it unmarked with other
recovered paper and board.
1 Scope

2 Terms and definitions
For the purposes of this European Standard the following terms and definitions apply:

unusable material
material unusable in the production of paper and board. It consists of "non-paper components and paper and board
detrimental to production". Recovered paper and board should in principle be supplied free of unusable materials,
but where for specific grades a certain proportion of unusable materials is agreed between purchaser and supplier,
it shall refer solely to the element described as "paper and board detrimental to production"

consist of any foreign matter in the recovered paper and board which, during processing, may cause damage to
machines or interruptions to production or may reduce the value of the finished product, such as :
metal;
plastic;

glass;
textiles;
wood;
sand and building materials;
synthetic materials;
synthetic papers.
2.3
paper and board detrimental to production
grades of paper and board which have been recovered or treated in such a way that they are, for a basic or
standard level of equipment, unsuitable as raw material for the manufacture of paper and board, or are actually
damaging, or whose presence makes the whole consignment of paper unusable
A growing number of mills have, however, adapted treatment plants to handle such grades, and the range of
papers and boards capable of being recycled is increasing all the time as technology develops. The criteria for
defining the percentage of "unusable materials" for these grades will be subject to individual mills' specifications.
3 Grade identification
Recovered paper and board is graded as follows :
Group 1: ordinary grades;
Group 2: medium grades;
Group 3: high grades;
Group 4: kraft grades;
Group 5: special grades.
4 Moisture content in recovered paper and board
Recovered paper and board will, in principle, be supplied with moisture of not more than the naturally occuring
