Overview

SIST EN 10168:2004 is a European Standard developed by CEN that specifies the standardized list and description of information items to be included in inspection documents for steel products. It applies to iron and steel products described in EN 10021 and EN 10204, focusing on inspection documentation such as certificates and quality reports. By defining standardized designations, definitions, and unique code numbers for sections of inspection documents, EN 10168 aims to streamline communication and reduce misunderstandings in steel trade across Europe.

This standard is essential for manufacturers, inspection bodies, purchasers, and logistics personnel involved in the steel industry, providing a clear framework for documenting product verification, testing, and compliance.

Key Topics

  • Standardized Inspection Documentation: EN 10168 provides a comprehensive framework for listing information in inspection documents linked to steel products. This includes product description, inspection tests, validation statements, and transaction details.

  • Information Groups & Code Numbers: The standard divides information into key groups, each with unique code numbers for easy reference:

    • Group A: Commercial transactions and parties involved (e.g., manufacturer's works, purchaser, order numbers)
    • Group B: Description of steel products (e.g., steel grade, product dimensions, marking)
    • Group C: Inspection details, including sampling and testing results such as tensile strength, hardness, impact tests, and chemical analysis
    • Group D: Other tests like non-destructive testing and surface inspection
    • Group Z: Validation including compliance statements, CE marking, and signatures of authorized personnel
  • Clear Definitions and Uniform Terminology: The standard draws definitions from EN 10204 and specifies terms such as sample location, test direction, and test methods to ensure uniform understanding.

  • Flexible Layout and Supplementary Information: While the standard defines the sections and codes rigidly, the format and sequence of inspection documents may be adapted according to customer or manufacturer preferences. Supplementary information can be added under specific codes.

Applications

  • Steel Manufacturing and Supply Chain: Manufacturers use EN 10168 to prepare consistent inspection certificates that accompany steel products, ensuring purchasers receive verified information about product conformity and quality tests.

  • Quality Assurance and Compliance: Inspection bodies and laboratories follow EN 10168 guidelines to record and communicate the results of mechanical, chemical, and physical tests accurately, supporting traceability and compliance verification.

  • Contract and Order Fulfillment: Purchasers and suppliers rely on these standardized documents to confirm that the supplied steel matches the order requirements, minimizing disputes related to product specification and test results.

  • International Trade Facilitation: By harmonizing inspection documentation across Europe, EN 10168 reduces language and procedural barriers, easing cross-border steel transactions and enhancing supply chain transparency.

Related Standards

  • EN 10204 – Metallic Products – Types of Inspection Documents: EN 10168 works in conjunction with EN 10204, which defines the types of inspection certificates (e.g., type 2.1 declaration, type 3.1 inspection certificate). EN 10168 details the information within these documents.

  • EN 10021 – Steel Products – Technical Delivery Conditions – General Technical Delivery Requirements: Provides the basis for the product specifications and conditions referenced within EN 10168 inspection documents.

  • ISO 9001 – Quality Management Systems: Organizations using EN 10168 for inspection documents can integrate it with ISO 9001 compliance for robust quality management in steel production and delivery.

3 Terms and definitions For the purposes of this European Standard, the terms and definitions given in EN 10204 apply. 4 Principles All types of inspection documents specified in EN 10204 have as a common element groups of information which make it possible to assign them clearly to the corresponding products supplied (see Table 1, information groups
A and B). All inspection documents, except for the type 2.1 document "Declaration of compliance with the order", contain information on non-specific or specific tests carried out on the basis of the relevant product specification (see Table 1, information groups C and D). In all types of inspection documents a statement on the conformity of the products delivered with the requirements of the order shall be included (see Table 1, information group Z). The organization responsible for supplying an inspection document may vary the sequence and the lay-out of the information given in clause 5 and Tables 2 to 5. It may also delete unnecessary sections depending on the product. The code number for the different sections in Tables 2 to 5 is unique. Other numbers shall not be used. The section designations given in Tables 2 to 5 should be given in the relevant sections of the inspection documents. They may be abbreviated if no misunderstanding is caused (e.g. 'direction' instead of 'direction of the test piece'). If there is not enough room in a section for the required information, a reference to a supplement or a free section in the inspection document may be used for the section in question. In this case, the information shall be given in the supplement or in the free section under the corresponding code number. SIST EN 10168:2004
